Squirrel proof feeders (Yankee Flipper vs. Squirrel Buster)

I'm trying to decide between the Droll Yankee Flipper and the Brome Squirrel Buster. Anybody have either of these?

I like the fact the Brome can be washed in the dish washer and would probably keep the seed dryer than the Droll. But, the Droll sure does seem like it would be entertaining.

I have the Yankee Flipper, but it has not been as entertaining as I thought. The squirrels quickley caught on and left it alone! I guess I had hoped to see them flying through the air more.

I hang my feeders with fishing line or very thin wire, far enough from the branch so that the squirrels can't reach down to the feeder. It must be too labor intensive because I never see them even attempt to raid the feeders. They just wait for the birds to drop stuff down to them on the ground.

Can't believe I'm bringing this thread up yet again (such a good GWC search engine!), but the critters just keep popping up and I, for one, enjoy reading this thread over and over (ok, so it's a sign of senility - ok, I get it!). The tiny puppy I had when first I started this thread is now two and a half years old, but still tiny - (she's a line-bred sport beagle and all of 10 and a half pounds) - so I'm still freaked out by coons and possums w/sharp claws & teeth in my tightly fenced yard. Pup is now trustworthy enough to have her own dog door out into the back yard (I still casually monitor her wanderings), but now I'm back to playing warden - turning on the spotlights and reconning the area before she goes out. Because ..... just this week, we've had two close encounters w/juvenile possums - beagle is good to go (i.e. fearless), but I'm freaked! Tonight I determined that critters are taking up residence (or at least hiding from the beagle) in the underground drainage pipe network that runs beneath my backyard. There are four entrys - three of which are accessible for me to block w/hardware cloth type netting. Seems like what I've got to do is going to be late at night, blast the pipes w/water to clear whatever and then critter block them off. Anybody have any other ideas?

It's interesting to me that those who design feeders to be sold don't take into consideration what design(s) work(s). They keep making junk because we keep buying it. In my opinion, there are three big no-no's in hummingbird feeders. 1) The holes through which the juice is accessed must be small: just big enough for the hummers and no more. 2) The distance from the top of the juice to the feeder hole needs to be too long for wasps and bees, but short enough for hummers to get access. 3) The feeder MUST NOT leak. Over the years I have fed thousands upon thousands of hummers.

We have been using baffles with excellent luck. We only see squirrels on the ground, never on the feeders. We use the tubular baffles on a shepard's hook. There are four feeders hung from one hook and multiple other shepard's hooks placed around the yard with the same baffles, and no squirrels draining the feed. Much less expensive than a single feeder. Martha

Been years since I redid the kitchen (and sold that house) but still come here most every day to see what is new - I "personally" have one cat, Heidi, she just turned 13. Until this Spring I also had Harley who was 13 in the Spring. Sadly, the time came to tell him goodbye due to his almost unmanageable overactive thyroid. He was my orange and white tabby. Heidi is the brown/gray one, she evidently has a double coat because most weeks I vacuum up enough hair to 'clothe' another cat. She loves to drink out of the toilet and she is my acrobat. Perhaps she thinks that if her feet touch the floor something terrible will happen. She is a totally inside cat, as was Harley. I keep my lounge chair and couch covered with inexpensive quilts because Heidi shreds upholstery. Six years ago my daughter and grand-daughter in law brought home a tiny kitten, maybe six weeks old, I named her Miss Kitty, she is outside part of the day and inside the rest of the time (we live on five acres and my home is closer to the back property line than to the road). Miss Kitty was not properly handles while a kitten (I was still living at my previous home during the work week and only out here on weekends. My sister in law lived next door and 'cared' for Miss Kitty but she has always been stand-offish. Miss Kitty insists on drinking from the water faucet. Miss Kitty is the only one that loves the kitchen counters. Then there are the boys - the actually are the grandson's cats but I feed them, vet them, bring them in when the weather is bad. Kitty Boy is (I think) either 3 or 4 years old. Brad brought him home to be a barn cat (keep in mind this little cat was maybe 8 wks old and just leaving him in the barn alone was iffy, at best). Because Mo (Mogley), the huge tuxedo male had no intention of befriending Kitty Boy. The are somewhat friends now. Mo is (I think) 6 years old. I'm with rudy. I'll go one step further. Buy one of those green "cornholders" at Lowe's. They sell corn "ears" of compressed corn that's like 10 in one. THey also sell a little cage with hunds of seeds and raisns stuck togther, my squirrells share it with woodpeckers and other birds....it hands from a tree on a chain they can all use. It keeps them very busy and off your feeders. And your squirrells will have nice healthy coats! Everybody wins.

LOL msrpaul!!-- I gave up trying to "outsmart" those squirrels, too!! I bought one of the little cedar boxes to fill with corn and peanuts. Keeps the squirrels busy for hours,,, but oh boy am I in trouble if I forget to fill the dang thing,,,,,,,,,, it's like "hello..the box is empty and now I'm off to the birdfeeders"!! I love it when they sit outside and peek in thru the screen door trying to see where I am...

The Squirrel Buster Bird Feeder is a better buy for the money with no battery necessary but they both have their advantages. They are both large capacity. The Squirrel Buster has a removable cardinal ring and it is dishwasher safe. You can find the video on the Squirrel Buster at the link below. Also the Droll Yankee Flipper video is on the backyard bird watcher site as well.

It is going to cost you around $85-$90 no matter where you go
nice feeder though, we have had ours for just over a year and not a single seed has been eaten by squirrels

I own a yankee flipper as well and it has lasted many years - probably going on 5 now against the elements which is pretty respectable. It is a bit pricey but when you average it out based on how long it lasts and that it's so well built it is worth it. Here is the link to it on amazon. http://amzn.to/1UdB714

Also, there is a variant that doesn't use batteries called the yankee whipper. Instead of a spinning ring it has spring loaded perches that collapse when squirrels get to them. Probably not quite as entertaining as the flipper but still a good brand and very well built. http://amzn.to/1rvQiIc
