creeping charlie

How do you get rid of a Creeping Charlie?? I just pulled a whole bunch out but I know it will keep coming back. It is growing under a tree( moist soil and shade!!!) and invading my garden as it does every year. What can I use on it that won't kill my perennials??? I appreciate any advice!

There is nothing you can spray on Creeping Charlie that will kill it and no other plant, but the soil conditions you describe are just what this "weed" much prefers so the correct solution is to correct the soil condiitons that exist, make it better so the "weed" won't grow there.
What is the level of organic matter in that soil? How well does that soil drain?

I don't know how much organic matter is in the soil but I can tell you that it's a garden that's about only 4 years old. I bought good top soil and compost and the perennials took beautifully. I leave the dead plant materials there to decompose and I rarely fertilize.

I inherited the creeping charlie from my Grandmother- I took a Hosta from her garden and I didn't realize the creeping charlie was there.

It looks great as ground cover but I am afraid it will choke off the perennials. Can they all live together and the perennials still thrive? It tangles all around my hydrangea that I also took from my grandmother a few years ago.

Ok I have heard of "builder grade" being mentioned on this forum and various places. I didn't realize it was a type of bermuda, I interpreted it as some cheap bermuda the builder puts down:). We moved to this home couple of years back, so i mean't whatever the builder had put down 10 years back. No idea on the history of this lawn prior to our ownership to be honest. Our right side of the home has some junipers and we are always battling with hand-picking weeds and then laying pine-needles. This summer we decided to pull out these junipers and lay bermuda sod. I think the type if Tif 419. Yes I went the seed route for a small patch and it grew but it was a different green :) . It took ages to grow and I decided not to grow it.

Violets and glechoma are not nitrogen fixers. However, both low growing plants will shade the ground, regulate soil moisture somewhat, and scavenge excess nutrients. I dont know if they will eventually compete with the vegetables for water and nutrients but both plants can turn into a nuisance and spread through large areas if left unchecked. Creeping charlie especially, when happy, has the ability to overrun and smother other plants 6" and under with its stolons and vining growth. Unmown violets can start to get up in height in my yard too (6-8"). Eventually any fruit sitting directly on another plant is going to kill that plant and both it and the fruit are going to rot.

In and out for me here in Pennsylvania; we fall below freezing in October and stay there through late April. I restrict myself to six. But daughters do get planted (there are currently...counting...29 in the heater) and given away. Of those, 3 have sprouted so far, but it's very early yet and I jumped the gun a little in terms of planting them. Of the succulents, they're one of the only ones I can keep alive. I tend to overwater everything else. Well, except Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus. Those I can handle, so I get several seasons of indoor blossoms!
