Hi All. I was just wondering if anyone thought it would be acceptable to make a donation to Katrina relief victims in place of a Sept. gift box? We (I) could do this in the name of the person we (I) send to each month. I know we all look forward to our gifts and everyone is so generous, but even if it's just the amount of postage we each pay might go to doing some good. Any thoughts? Barb

Btw, I dropped my own swap! It's terrible I know! However, I am still going to host-because I enjoy this swap, I just can't send/receive anymore. Arrangements have been made so this won't directly effect anyone. My pal that I send to is going to have a new pal this month. If anyone is curious as to who my pal was --it was GGSNAIL!!!!! What a great gal! I will miss sending her goodies!! However, I would like to make a donation in honor of swap. I think that is a great idea.

I've found the folks on GW to be an outgoing and generous group. A person I recently traded with sent me an email about a GW member who has been displaced by this catastrophy. She felt bad about asking for help but finally did and we've been putting together basic needs boxes for her and her grandkids. I'm thankful for GW being a network for various types of needs. That's a Great Idea to donate to the hurricane relief for September!

Ok everyone, I don't like to rock the boat, but I really have to say what I feel here. I think the decision to donate to the relief fund should be on a individual basis. Personally, I don't agree with it, selfish as it may seem.

Two reasons that come to mind are these: I have already given what I want to the relief fund and it is my birthday tomorrow, the 14th. I think if you want to give to the fund, you should do it on your own. When I signed up to the Hortiholics Swap, it was for that, when I give my gift this month, it will be to my secret person.

I'm sorry of this upsets anyone, but I just can't sit here and not say what I feel. Stacy

No offense taken. It was just a suggestion. If you've already given or not, whatever the case may be, it's entirely your choice. It just seemed to me that we who will receive something every month could do something for those who will not get anything for quite some time to come.

I was hoping we wouldn't get a frost before a hibiscus I started from seed last year bloomed. It turned out to be a white one with a red throat. My ususal lost labeling had me guessing. The closed gentian has started to bloom and it's fun to watch the bees trying to get into the "closed" flower. Very determined for the last of the years pollen.

I received my secret pals box, and I have been very very busy. Sorry I haven't had a chance to post. It had a handmade plastic canvas crocheted box, 2 decorative resin garden stones, 3 small how to books that are on various topics. Thanks secret pal for the gifts! My girls saw the box and they immediately fell in love with it and it is now in there room and I haven't seen it since! I plan on putting the stones out in the garden as soon as I have the chance and also to read the books. Thanks so much for the thought and the gifts!

I just had to report about something in my email today that was so unexpected and sweet. I am assuming it was sent by my HA secret pal, because I have no other. I even cried!! She sent one of those special greetings, and mine was for Autumn. The sermon in church this morning was about gifts, the kind we can't earn. Thank you Maureen, what an absolutely beautiful Rose! What is the name of it. Aren't you then one that has the 40 or so Rose Bushes? The only two I can get to do really well is the Climbing Don Juan and the Joseph's Coat. Oh, and I have a wild pink & white that has been transplanted. They all do well in the Spring and then fizzle out. Any suggestions? Stacy

HI Stacy. It is Viking Queen, a climber. Very easy to grow, no spray rose. Take a few years to get established. Mine's 2 yrs old now, I expect great things from her next year. Tell me what colors, fragrance and size you like. I'll have lots of suggestions.

I have several. I would like more heirloom Roses. Would love to get some Seven Sisters, especially. I have three heirloom rugogas. A white one is from a lady from my area who's passed away, a dark pink I had many years from my grandma, and a pink one from my brother in law's ancestors in MN from a 100 years ago. They do so well in my zone 4. I also have a pink Grootendorst, Therese Bugnet, and several hybrid teas. But, I do want more antique ones. Treasa

I received my BEAUTIFUL box today! Inside was several variegated plants, scented geraniums, sweedish ivy, spash plants, hoya, several vining as well. I love them all!
I also received a beautiful little birdhouse that I adore, garden stakes, one wiht a watering can, a gardening glove, a hummingbird. I received a wind cathcer. This box will keep me busy tonight, and I am sure in the mnorning as well. Thank you so much secret pal. You ALWAYS know exactly what to send!

OH!!!! Also, in the bottom of the box, nicely wrapped is an awesome porcelain ROOSTER!!!! And there is also a big bag of Blow Pops that my children are very tickled over! So far, two watermelon's and a grape has been spoken for! Smiles.

I can get you some cuttings from a seven sisters rose when I go to Oklahoma in a couple of weeks.

I didn't think I could get a cutting to root, but the one I stuck into the rooting medium a couple of months ago rooted for me. I moved it to a larger pot and it has been putting on new growth for the past month. I am absolutely thrilled to know that I can do actually do this. I have several more cuttings I am waiting to put on roots now so I will have some roses to trade come spring.

I'm late getting my package sent to my pal this month. I promise I will have it on it's way by the early part of next week. I also have not received a box from my secrect pal this month.

hi everybody! hope everybody is doing great! it seems like everybody is getting really good boxes! I got a box from my secret pal today and I needed to have my spirits lifted and man did this box help! I got a bunch of plants. I got some coleus 'stained glass' I have been wanting some coleus so bad and this one has BEAUTIFUL leaves! I see why they call it stained glass lol! I also got a varigated spider plant that is absolutely gorgeous! how'd you know I'd been wanting this??lol!I also got a really nice looking toad lily. I've never heard of that before! it has really neat looking spotted leaves! that's gonna go in my lily garden for next spring! and I also got a white brugsmansia! I can't wait until I see them bloom! I'll be sure to post pictures! oh and I also got a pretty necklace too :-) I can't wait to wear it and show it off :-) thanks secret pal!!

hello everyone i hope you are having a great weekend..i have been down for a couple of days fighting off getting sick.. wow i got my secert pal box today and it was amazing..16 different freshly picked seeds, a garden book,cookie cutters for my daughter and i..a 4pc terra cotta set,2 fal leaves picks to add some fall color..

and the best for last---a large peice of sliced wood, with a fall sence w/ barn and pumpkins embossed on it, with the most amazing fall colors.. it is breath taking.. my hubby even praised it.

DH and I are in the middle of big changes. We found a farm 3 hours outside of the cities and are now in the middle of selling the house - so we can buy the farm, who can afford 2 morgages!!! I could not imagine how nervracking it can be to sell a house. Please send some good thoughts my way!!! Thanks

I'm afraid my old pal is having some difficult times, since I didn't get an August package, or the mail system lost it. I just hope she and her family are OK. My new pal assured me with a sweet greeting, that my September box is on it's way, and she apologized that it's late. : ) It should be here any day now. : ) I'm sooooooooo excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to tell you about it!! : ) Well, I entered 6 recipes in that local cook-off, so in about three weeks I'll know if I get chosen to go there and make one or more of them. The grand prize is $500 worth of groceries. I've entered 12 years, and have been chosen to participate every time. I usually have something I raised in the recipes. Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful fall. Our leaves are gorgeous right now. And, no FROST yet, so I've been enjoying my flowers longer than a lot of years. : ) Treasa
