vinegar as a weed killer
Comments (6)If you search through the old posts, and maybe do a general read-through of the whole forum as you have time, you will see several postings about vinegar, either the household stuff at a strength of 3% or 5% or the horticultural at 20-30%. Be aware that the latter is a STRONG acid, and should be treated with great caution. Vinegar kills only the leaves, not the roots, of plants, especially young plants. If the plant is an older one, or a returning perennial, then the roots won't be killed with one application, and will need repeated applications. Soaking the roots will only - temporarily - make the soil acid. This MIGHT kill off some weeds, but might not kill off others, and won't be good for the surrounding plants you don't want to kill. If you want to spray against slugs and snails on hostas, a weakish solution of cold caffeinated coffee will stop them eating the leaves, but may not kill them. If you want to kill slugs, your best bet is Slug-go or any other iron-phosphate based granule or pellet. It's harmless to pets and birds, and breaks down to a mild fertilizer....See MoreThe Use of Vinegar on Weeds Other Than on Dandelions
Comments (11)Hey there It Better Be Organic, How hard is it to pull up a weed? If you have quack grass growing all around all your vegie gardens like I do, then I would estimate a couple lifetimes! I am smothering left and right, but have also been contemplating spraying vinegar to set it back a little bit. And when you have clay soil, you don't pull up weeds mostly, you DIG them up, and then try to get the dirt to let go of the roots. Takes a LONG time, and I always wind up with dirt in my eyes, hair, clothing, everywhere. It is depressing how vigorous my weeds are. The quack grass is even growing where I put down cardboard and woodchips last year around the raised bed, and goes under the sides into the raised beds. The long on-the-level garden is really being attacked this year. I think quack grass is a manifestation of the devil! It is worse than creeping charlie, and that's saying something. My goal is to put down cardboard and wood chips around every bit of garden, but that will take some time, and lots of maintenance. Marcia...See Morevinegar as a weed killer
Comments (1)The type of vinegar used is a 15-20% vinegar which is available at organic nurseries. The problem, vinegar acts just like Roundup as it will kill anything it touches. So if you are killing weeds in a lawn it will also kill the surrounding grass so you need to be very careful. Also wear rubber gloves as this stuff is pretty caustic....See MoreKilling weeds with Vinegar
Comments (1)Trials have been done to assess how well various strengths of vinegar (acetic acid) will control weeds. Household vinegar can only kill tender weeds at an early stage, while higher strengths of 10 or 20% can kill somewhat tougher weeds. However these higher strengths bring their own safety issues, primarily their corrosive nature to eyes. Vinegars of any strength will only act as contact desiccants to weeds, and will not act systemically as Roundup will. The link is a good source of the pluses and minuses of vinegars for weed control.
