Growing Tomatoes

Yellow spots on my tomato leaves

About half of my plants have this yellowing on their leaves. On a few plants it is just getting started on the leaves at the very end of a few branches, but one plant is almost completely covered. I've looked at pictures online, and the closest thing I could find was possibly a nutrient deficiency like magnesium. Other than this all of the plants have been growing really well. I've got fruit set on all of my plants (4th of July's, and Steak Sandwich) and my tallest plant is approaching 48". I've been fertilizing every other week with Miracle Gro Tomato fertilizer.

Yes, we've had quite a bit a rain this past week, and only about 2 sunny days.

Any number of things could cause faint yellow spots (especially in the early stages), have you been through the tomato problem solver to get ideas yet? For example, early blight might show as faint yellow spotting at first. If you could post a pic, that might help with identification. I agree, it's probably early here for leaf mold, and the conditions really haven't been right for powdery mildew either. But just because I said that doesn't mean it's completely impossible -- be sure and also look at those pics in the problem solver as well. Here is a link that might be useful: tomato problem solver

I'm trying to find the same answer. I planted tomato in pots from Lowes, and 3 days later they are starting to get yellow patches on the leaves. If you find the answer please pot it.

My spots are more orange than yellow, almost a rusty color, but I know that color is subjective. I have read the feedback and still haven't found a solution, just that many other folks had this problem. I'm in zone 7 and planted some seedlings as I'd arrived too late to plant from seed. They were doing great but the lower leaves of 2 out of 4 plants have these dry looking orange spots. Any ideas of what to actually do about it, what it might be? Thanks!!

1) the spots at this time look more like some kind of mechanical damage, wind/cold burn/pollution or edema that has likely since passed. If that's what it is there is no need to spray fungicide and there is nothing you can do about it at this point. Only one picture I saw looks much like fungal spots. 2) the plants are in need of phosphorus (purpling). Unless you use something like bat guano tea very few organic sources will be able to get enough P to them quickly. If you use a high P amount liquid "bloom" fertilizer they will not look like that in about 5 days.

I'm no expert, but if they were my plants I'd blame the rain, but keep an eye on them.

Now, I'm assuming you've had quite a bit of rain. Or perhaps only a few inches, but the tomatoes are in a low-lying area, or your soil doesn't drain as well as you'd like.

If it's not waterlogging, it might be either early blight or tobacco mosiac visrus. It is really hard to tell when the symptoms are just starting. Of the 2, early blight seems likliest. If the young leaves twist and grow narrow, suspect the mosaic virus.

If the surface of those yellowed spots starts getting more yellow turning to necrotic, and is raised or "puckered" i'd suspect Mg defficiency. But i'm no expert :).

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am keeping an eye on things to see if they get worse, though everything seems about the same right now. Hopefully the rainy weather will let up in the next day like it is supposed to and give the ground a chance to drain.
