We can't tell you which of three or four warm season grasses your lawn might be composed of. Centipede, St. Augustine, and Bermuda are the most common. Yours looks to be a combination of Centipede and Bermuda.....and Poa annua....the green weed grass. In my opinion, the best way for homeowners to control Poa is by the careful application of a pre-emergent herbicide in the fall. Such an herbicide is of zero use once the plant is growing. A pre-emergent application, properly timed, can do wonders to control annual weeds (like Poa) . There's no reason to use Roundup or other post-emergent herbicides. The Poa won't be so obvious when your permanent grass greens up. Just do your research (your local Extension service will be able to help) so that you apply the right chemical, at the right time, and at the right rate. It is NOT impossible to get rid of.

Maybe the sage gives off a chemical that keeps it away. I read about a plant that did that and it prevented other plants from growing near it. I cannot remember which plant that was now, but it was an interesting article. My Russian Sage was over run by stilt grass this year. Maybe it just keeps wood sorrel away. Come to think of it, there wasn't any wood sorrel there when I weeded out the grass. Hmmmm. Some one / some company has made a weed preventor from the chemical that plant gave out, but I cannot remember the name of it either. Maybe someone else knows.

Okay great, thanks Gardengal48. Since the original poster and the other individual haven’t responded with a positive response to your recommendation I will assume your advice did not work. My yard is similar to the HU-868171717) person with hundreds growing and many deeply rooted at this point despite constant mowing. Can you elaborate on how frequent to mow or how low the mower should be set? I have a Torro push mower with settings we will say are 1-5 and the lowest I’ve ever gone is 3. I have zoysia grass and even at level three it’s difficult to mow that low. If I went to a 1 I would basically got to the dirt and assume kill the grass as well. So a professional recommended weed and feed and spot kill with roundup if that didn’t work. This lady (in her late 50’s early 60’s) seemed to be quite experienced and said she went to college for horticulture. Would you elaborate on how mowing would be effective or how often at what level? Otherwise I will post my results using the chemicals you deem harmful once the issue is contained. Thanks!

What has the temperature been like there in Atlanta lately? I'm going to go out on a limb here, and guess "pretty dang hot"! Lawns under heat stress, drought, or high temperature conditions should not have herbicides applied. Usually most herbicide labels mention 90° F, what we call "weeds" are usually VERY hardy compared with turfgrass, have deep taproots and/or waxy coatings on the leaves. Consequently while the weed plant defenses are at their best in tough growing conditions for turf, the grass plant may be damaged. When it's real hot and dry there isn't much of anything to be done for a lawn, at least cool season turfgrasses.
