Did I make a huge mistake??

Hi. New as a member here but have learned a great deal from you all, so thanks. This year I put in raised beds (4' x 8') and one is dedicated to tomatoes. I have six plants in the bed, one is a small determinate. Because we have gophers, I put a barrier in the bottom of the raised bed before putting about 8-10" of great soil on top. My plants are huge and doing well. But the fruit is small (after about 7 weeks), even on the Champion and Early Girl. Was the barrier a mistake, or will the roots grow sideways on top of the barrier? Should I try to remove it? Thanks
