Mulch, Railroad Ties and termites/water bugs/creepy-crawlies?

Though I don't care for them, there are railroad ties in my backyard, used as a border all the way around the backyard fence, making a three-foot flower bed surrounding the yard. Until I can replace them, I'm stuck with them.

Since I was concerned that there could be termites hiding in the railroad ties, I just put Term-a-Rid red mulch down on my bed next to the house. Now I hear that using mulch here in West Texas might draw water bugs and other creepy-crawlies into the house. Has anybody experienced this? If it's true, are the water bugs just drawn to the moisture? Won't they be drawn to the moisture in *any* flower bed with moist soil, whether it's mulched or not?

Has anybody tried Term-a-Rid mulch before? If so, what were your results?
