ID this violet please

I was out clearing and ran across a few of these little violets. I did not plant them so they must have been here and I just never noticed. I am in northeast Illinois. My girlfriend said they were not birdsfoot violets. They are in a shady woodland area and I suspect they are a native violet.

If I had to guess really fast, I'd guess Viola sororia; mostly because it's very widespread and fairly common. But it looks like it could be any of the stemless blue type.

You might want to try identifying it through the dichotomous key at the AVS website.

Another possibility for the white one is V. striata. The website I've linked to should ID your Violas easily if you want to verify them. A weed is just a plant that's growing where you don't want it to. I love my Violas but have no problem with rouging out the extras. I wait until after they bloom, though. Hi, Is a very lovely blue violet. I can see why you might get so much. Unfortunately, you are going to have a very difficult time figuring out what plant it is. In fact, it may be impossible to find out the name of it. I think I heard that there are at least 15,000 registered African violets. As you can imagine with that many violets there are several that are look-alikes so even if you find a name and picture that looks like your violet it may not be your violet. I would just be content with having a beautiful violet that has no name. All of us have at least one of those in our collection. Larry

Alwong, sometimes the bloom stalk needs to be manipulated to stand upright between leaves, instead of under. Go slow and be gentle. Also, a picture is worth 1000 words, maybe more. Is your plant growing in a nice flat rosette? If so, don't mess! You only need to pull off the ocassional outer row of leaves as they get old and grungy looking. If it's not in a flat rosette, if it's all over the place, chances are you have suckers and need to deal with those. As always, check out Rachel's site for illustrated instructions on what to do.
