If I may........

Today I bought a plant named Viola odorata 'Katy', it's a rose pink, single flower but I can't seem to find any information on it. Is Katy a registered name?

I've been growing Sidborough Pink for a while, although it's disappeared for the winter, again I can't find information on this cultivar. It's also produced nothing but cleistogamous flowers for a year. It's current residence is a cold greenhouse, any information?

Another one I can't find much on is V. bubanii, anyone care to share?

Does your greenhouse have supplemental lighting?? I'm not sure about the details, but I think daylength has something to do with cleistogamous/chasmogamous flower production. For example, the seedling violets I've been growing under fluorescent lights in a basement, have been producing nothing but cleistogamous flowers. I think I've got the lights set to come on for much more than normal daylength; they are only off for several hours each day.

Mastic can be used as an adhesive in non-wet areas. Your drywall is obviously in good shape, which means by itself it's not being hit by or incurring standing water. You didn't mention and water staining or degradation, so sure, mastic can be used to adhere the tile to it. Grid lines: It will most certainly help to add layout lines on the wall. It might help to strike chalk lines, then use a straight edge and sharpie marker to go over those lines. With differing tile sizes, you are correct in that you use the layout grid lines for overall guidance to keep the overall layout looking good, but on a tile-by-tile basis within the grid lines, the tile spacing is adjusted plus-or-minus here and there to keep that overall pattern looking good. Regarding uneven tile sizes...you might want to do a rough mock up. Your goal will be to not have a larger-than-normal tiles adjacent to several other larger-than-normal tiles. Several large tiles in a row can really throw the layout off. Same with several smaller-than-normal tiles in a row. That can result in a run of wide grout joints. Try to work out your layout and installation so larger-than-normal and smaller-than-normal tiles are mixed and mingled throughout the layout. Mastic usually holds tile pretty well on the wall, it's usually a "no sag" installation unless the tiles are heavy. If you think your tiles might sag, then have a collection of tile spacers and/or tile spikes (spacers shaped like wedges) to prevent sagging. These can be store bought or home made. I'd clean off the backs of the tiles. Use a sharp chisel to shave the dollops of silicone off the tile. If you start with crap, you'll end up with crap. Why start with compromised materials? If you use the "premixed adhesive" (mastic) to set the tiles, wait several days before grouting. Mastic cures by drying, so it needs air. If you use the "premixed grout" which is also a mastic-like material, read the installation and cleanup instructions. It can shrink as it dries, so it might not be the best choice if you have wide grout joints as the excessive shrinkage could result in it pulling away from the tiles. If you decide to opt away from the Mapei premixed stuff, see if they have Mapei Kerabond and Mapei Keralastic. That combination gives good working time and good stickiness in terms of minimizing sag. We're about to build a house I designed with the MBR on the second floor. I want to feel like I'm up in the trees at night. And there's just something about "going up the wooden hill" at night as my dad used to say as he carried me to bed. We designed my husband's media room on the first floor with an adjoining bath so it could be a semi-master on the main. If he eventually can't go up the stairs he won't mind, he can watch sci fi 24/7! It all comes down to taste, but... Your current house doesn't have any magic. I grew up in a Deck House so perhaps I am like another poster, conditioned to like contemporary. I currently live in a typical new house. Most people like them, but it leaves me cold. No thought to mass and proportion, and how the roof tells a story... But most people don't have a problem with that which is fine. Your old house makes my eye and heart happy. There seem to be a lot of contemporary lovers here, but that doesn't apparently represent the general population. It's like cork flooring: here everyone is using it but try shopping for it locally--no one seems to be using it. Anyway, your predicament makes me thankful we don't have to build a house with selling it in mind. Good luck!

Yes. I have sanded and finished subflooring for customers. Really no different from any other flooring finish work, except that you have to consider the fact that it happens to be a single construction floor system and, therefore, you have to take steps to protect what is below the floor when you sand and then apply stains and finishes. Anything you do above to the floor surface can easily find its way down to the space below...dust, stain and finish. You have to sink any top nails below the surface of the wood before you sand and continue to punch them below when necessary. You probably can never remove all tar paper lines and staining, but that is OK, as the floor will have a great look all by itself. I have finished these natural and stained a few. I also colored one green once at a customer's request. That one was unique and beautiful.

My kitchen is 5 1/2 years old. I have the Ridgewood cabinets from Adelphi. The KD company I was working with carried Wood-Mode as their primary cabinet line - too expensive for me, and I never particularly liked my sister's Wood-Mode cabinets. The KD had just started carrying Adelphi - I was probably their first customer, and the price and the look were what I wanted, and I could get their top-of-the line frameless cabinets at a good price. I am very satisfied with the cabinets, I've had no problems, the finish is quite durable and everything still works. I chose birch because it wasn't as grainy as oak, wasn't as plain as maple and wasn't as expensive as cherry or their other specialty woods, and I love birch trees! I looked at the red birch, it's beautiful, but it was more expensive, and I got exactly what I wanted with the white birch. My cabinets exactly match my neighbor's natural cherry cabinets, she actually used a left over piece of mine when she had to order more cabinets. The diagonal doors were non-negotiable, I love them and have no more of a problem getting into the upper corner cabinets, than I have getting into any of the upper cabinets. I'm fairly tall, but I still use a footstool to reach the backs of the top shelves. I love the big base cabinets and the extra counter space those cabinets give me. There's not really anything important I would change, the kitchen works for me, especially adding the peninsula. I see the new kitchens being posted and there are some wonderful new ideas and clever designs, but nothing I regret not having. The only thing I would really like is to get the microwave off the wall over the stove and put a hood up, but I just don't have the room for that change. We tried it in the initial designs and it didn't work. Good luck with your remodel, and remember, a kitchen is more than the sum of it's parts. Hi Baal,

Many violets do, indeed, change their petal mood depending on day length, like Tom says - long days promote cleistogamous flowers (though you can get a few petalled flowers on almost any violet in cleitso mood, now and then).

Viola bubanii:
One of the little charmers from the Pyrenees, occupying a similar niche to V. cenisia (eg.) in the Alps. I was disappointed not to see it on my trip to the Pyrenees a few years ago (but I was pleased with the species I did see, and the friends I went with). It grows both in high pastures and rockier crevices.
It can be bought from Kevock Garden, near Edingburgh (http://www.kevockgarden.co.uk/). You could contact them to see if, from their experience of growing it, they can answer any specific questions you may have.
I'd also contact the Jardin Botanique du Tourmalet (http://www.afleurdepau.com/65/Tourmalet/Site.htm).

The greenhouse has filtered light as it's still bubble-wrapped on the inside but last year it was growing in outside in partial shade (morning sun only). We don't have any heating, let alone lighting in there ;). The other Violas have similar conditions throughout the year and only the Sid. Poppet and koreana don't produce petals. I'll try and find a different site for them this year to see if that makes a difference.

Sorry - yes - 'Sidborough Poppet' - I forgot...

I have only grown this cultivar once, years ago. I bought it from Westacre Gardens in Norfolk, and it soon died on me (without flowering). The demise of the plant possibly reflected my cultivational ineptitude at the time -- I do not want to cast aspersions on West Acre!

You know, I still don't know for sure the origin of this cultivar. If I had to have a stab, I'd say Viola riviniana; and if pushed 'Purpurea Group'. There is a tricky taxonomic point here in that if I am basically right, since I do not know the formal definition (in terms of size ranges of leaves, eg.) for the 'Purpurea Group' cultivar group, 'Sidborough Poppet' may fall within it or outside it. Anyway, all I can do is chew the point with you generally - sorry.

I don't know about V. odorata 'Katy', though I would try checking for cultivars by that name as spelled in other languages, eg. 'Katja'.
I have a worry, though, since there is an African Violet called 'Katja' or 'Rhapsodie Katja', etc. (see link).
Another possibility (clutching at straws)... Morris May, who is a commercial grower of various members of the Viola genus, has a relation called Katie...

Quick update

Sidborough Poppet flowered well this year (just to prove me wrong) and while it's colouration and flower shape is very similar to V. riv. Purpurea Group, it's so much tinier in comparison. I wonder if it might be sterile because all the seed I've collected and those that must have self sown have never germinated.

I think you may be right on Katja Mike, it lists that name on the label as well as Katy.

Dear Baa,
Sidborough Poppet cannot be sterile because I grow a seedling which derived from seeds sown by a friend in 2002.
My plant developes grains (only cleistogamic until now) which are of similar size and colouration as those of the Viola riviniana Purpurea Group. About the origin: Sidborough is a place in Kent, maybe this little charmer was found there or there was (is) a violet breeder?
