Really dislike our 1970's split entry home - Ideas needed! Please help!

We have a split entry home. There are so many features I dislike I don't know where to start - the curb appeal is non-existent, the layout does not work for our family, small bedrooms with no where to add a master suite, no storage, entire lower floor is wasted space - and on and on.

Not sure where to even start. Like our location, neighborhood, and in the current market wouldn't want to even attempt to sell. So as an alternative - need ideas to make this home "work."

I've been told it is very hard to add on to this style of home due to the roof line, etc. Can't just go one direction or the other without the house seeming unbalanced.

Currently you walk into the entry and to your right is the garage, to your left you can go up stairs or down stairs. Upstairs is the living room/diningroom/kitchen combo, two bedrooms (smaller) and a bath. Downstairs is a familyroom, laundry room, two bedrooms and bath. We basically do not use the downstairs at all. Too cold in the winter.

What can you do with this style home?? Attached the best picture i could find. this is the part you see from the road. Further to the right is the doorway wtih the garage. The home is rectangle shape with the short side towards the road.

THank you!
