Yes. Good for you by the way. Saving your own seeds from open-pollinated tomato plants can be quite fun and it's easy to do. ;)

Hope you don't mind if I refer you to another FAQ from the Seed Saving Forum. It's called How To Save Tomato Seeds that Trudi wrote sometime back and it is quite well written and detailed. It also explains how to dry, label, and store them once collected.

I've also linked below a long discussion called Questions about Saving Seeds from last summer. It's about tomatoes specifically too and covers many of the finer points like decontamination etc.

Al, yes, there are some special steps with tomatoes unlike most other vegetables/fruit. Basically involving fermenting off the germination-inhibiting gel coating on the seeds. Below is one of the better online tutorials on saving your own tomato seeds.

A very simple way to do it is just squeez the seed and juice out of the tomato into a shallow cup. Place it in the sun. After about 4-6 days clarify it out doors using a hose. This means adding water and pouring off the junk. Once your down to seeds only drop it on a paper plate out doors to dry. Then bring it in for few weeks to dry and then store'm.
