American Bittersweet

I am an avid reader of these boards, rarely a poster, but after doing some research I still can't find an answer to my question...so here goes!

I have two American Bittersweet vines that are finishing up their second summer in my yard. They were quite small when planted and are now about 5 feet tall. Problem is that they never bloomed either summer, let alone bear fruit.

Does anyone know if it takes a while for them to bloom, or did I get bum plants?

Hello Kristenfw this is my very first visit to this site and already I find someone with my problem. I too have a bittersweet that does nothing but grow and have its green leaves. I've had mine maybe 3 yrs., it grows and drapes beautifully over an iron structure, but will not produce. I look forward to any possible solutions. Linda

Don't feed it. They grow in the woods and are a "wild" vine. Are you sure its an American Bittersweet? If so, its an endangered species (plant). I'll post the url for the article when I can copy and paste it. The native plant isn't invasive and won't strangle trees they grow on. Where did you buy or get the plant? I want one for the backyard.Good memories.

I had bittersweet growing in my Massachusetts garden and it took over everything. I dont know if it is the same as American bittersweet, but I would really research it before planting it. Mine was extremely aggressive and almost impossible to get rid of once established. Sorry, and I hope I'm writing about a different vine. Kat

I live in Sundre, AB and we are zone 2b. I'm interested in growing american bittersweet along my deck. It has a south and west exposure. Most of the places I look, list this vine as a zone 3. Have you heard any success stories in zone 2B? Thanks in Advance!
