From what I have read you must throw away the entire plant roots and all and then not plant in that area for awhile.

How do you know you have Late Blight?

I have only confirmed through pictures online. However, they have what I see in my greenhouse nailed. The fruit, leaves and stems all match what I have found (some university had pics...can't remember which).

The reason I'm asking is that I'd want to be VERY sure that it's Late Blight and not Early Blight before destroying your plants. Can you post a picture?

How long have your plants had symptoms? Late Blight is very rapid and makes a terrible gummy mess of your plants, while Early Blight or septoria basically makes dark spots on the leaves and are quite common diseases that can usually be handled without destroying the plants.

If it's Late Blight, your State will need to be notified so they can confirm and record it.

It does look as if your plants are infected with Late Blight, and that's really too bad. We haven't usually had it widespread in the deep South, though I think I read that a few outbreaks had been seen last year.

Well, you need to utterly destroy the plants if that's what you have. How did the infection get into your greenhouse? Freezing kills the spores but I'm not sure about other treatments. If you just bag the plants and put them out in the trash, I'd think the spores would get loose in a landfill.

I don't think you can cut them back and have new growth occur. Late Blight infects all of the plant. Better to start over with clean soil and clean plants. Call your county agricultural agent to report it and ask for the best way to disinfect the greenhouse.

Maybe in some ways, your neighbors should thank you -- your greenhouse probably kept the spores from wafting for miles around your property.

It's a terrible disease...

I am in Charleston, SC. It must have blown in through the open door. I first noticed it on one of the plants closest to the door. This is very disappointing...my first crop in my new greenhouse! Ack.

Well after a week your plants would be dead if they had Late blight,becoming a smelly mess with black spots on the stems.

Well, here's another opinion. Perhaps a cultural problem? Lots of plant in a relatively small container watered w/one dripper.

A single dripper moistens a relatively small amount of potting mix where it essentially goes straight down. Mini-sprinklers are often a better choice in containers because they spread the water over most or all of the pot's surface.

Then, too, there's the issue of how long, also how often, you run the system.

I'm not convinced from your pictures that you are dealing with late blight. I became intimately acquainted with late blight last year when it took out my entire tomato crop in a week, and your problem looks different to me.

Take a few suspect leaves to your local cooperative extention office and have them run tests to identify what you have. Our office just ran an ad in the local paper warning of late blight outbreak in our state and requesting that any suspect plants be brought in for proper id. It's important for home gardeners and commercial growers in your area to be informed if you do indeed have late blight.

If it's not late blight, you may be able to save your crop.

After last year I feel a bit sick to my stomach just reading this thread--I hope what you have isn't what we had here in the northeast. :(
