Growing Tomatoes

tomato troubles w/ pics (long)

I have been reading this for quite a while, great info.

I am a novice tomatoer who would love to grow a few tomatoes.

A little info:

I live in Brea ca.

My plants are in 5-15 gal pots

I planted about 3 weeks ago

Bought plants from H.D.

It was around 75 deg. for first few days, then got very

hot up to a 100) for 4 days then back to cool with some

light morning showers. Now we have typical june weather

gloomy mornings sunny afternoons up to 75 deg

Here's some pics

#1 is this bacterial speck ? Its just on bottom few leaves.

pic #2 I think this is early blight. Is it to late to spray with daconil? Should I pull the plant? again its only on the bottom 4-5 leaves

pic #3 leaf curl or leaf roll? Should I be worried?

I am watering about a quart of water every 3 days (When it was hot I used a quart every day)

My plants receive 6-8 hours of sun per day, if the sun is out.

Sorry for the long post. Just trying to add as much info as possible. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your bottom pic is leaf roll (the inconsistent moisture kind since I'm thinking your zone isn't too cool temps prone right now. ;) Inconsistent moisture levels is a common problem with containers - but it can also have other causes such as too much nitrogen fertilizer, root bound plants, etc. Timed drip irrigation is a good idea for containers - just something to consider.

Top photo is a bit fuzzy but looks like pest holes and some sun scald to me. Sure it is possible that it's blight but doesn't look classic and since you have flea beetle and aphid damage on the other plants too that shifts the odds, IMO, away from disease toward pests. They - the pests and the old leaves - need to be removed. ;)

Middle photo - I'd spray all of them with Daconil just in case. It is a preventative, not a cure, so the earlier you spray the better the control. Then remove the damaged leaves and just keep an eye on it for now.

Thanks. Don't be too envious. It's a 30 minute drive out there so I only grow things I can sprout at home then transplant. Thankfully my cousin's husband waters for me and keeps an eye out for pests.

Thanks so much for the replies. I had replied yesterday in detail, but I guess I closed the browser while it was still in preview mode as the post is not here today. The pot is 7.5 gallons, but you can't see that from the angle of the photo. The plant is a Homestead that is 16 inches tall. Days are high 70's to mid 80's with nights in the high 60's. The plant has no business being stressed under the current conditions. July is hell here. April is nice. The watering has been fine. Not too soggy, but not too dry. I can't see how environmental stress will only affect half of the plant. Notice in the pictures that on one side of the branch the leaves hold their shape when lifted by the stick, but the leaves on the opposite side fold over limply. My first year gardening turned to disaster due to nasties in ground. I had six awesome plants growing over six feet tall and one by one they dropped. Healthy one day then two days later limp from top to bottom. I'll find out if this is it as this plant won't make it if it is the same thing. I don't want to keep it around if this is the case, but I want to at least let it stay around to verify that it is indeed a terminal problem. 2003... About two weeks later.... *sigh* mule That cut stem victim is doing great as of right now. It is well behind its brothers and sisters, but it looks healthy as can be. I can't believe it! its_kristy That is the best candidate yet. I have a hard time finding pictues of it in its early stages, so I'm not sure. Thanks again.

Usually overwatering will manifest in yellowing leaves first, then it's possible that they could turn brown. Your plants are pretty close together but I don't think spacing is the cause. LOL, I've had tomato jungles before :). One other thing I wanted to mention is that, in my opinion, your stakes are way too short. Since you have limited space in the garden, UP is the way to go with your maters. 6ft stakes with 1 to 1 1/2ft below soil level would be good, and lots of string or twine to keep them on the stakes :). I didn't see any browning of the foliage on your pics. Can you post close-ups of the leaves that are affected? Kristi

Yes, I know the post was really detailed. I waffled about whether to put that much detail in it, but felt like I'd covered the basic ideas/options myself but kept running into obstacles that I tried to outline in the post so folks maybe would understand the problems with most of the options I thought of. It was not my intent to make anyone's head explode. Thanks to all of you for your ideas, however. I do appreciate it. Igloochic, I hadn't really thought of hanging glass...that's an interesting option. I do like the Asian look of shoji which might work, maybe in a shutter? Marti8a, I love that pic...they were my first choice, but don't know if I can get a 9' span. Think I will have to visit a decor store that sells shades and see what they say. Thanks, again

Greetings from Pasadena! I'm pretty much a newbie too (this is my first season with tomatoes), but the first pic looks like snail & heat damage to me. I had the same problems with my tomatoes after that crazy heat wave we had. I put down some iron phosphate (which I understand is more "organic" than Sluggo or metalhyde snail killers) -- no more holes!

My tomatoes have suffered a bit from our very inconsistent weather. It was mild to moderately warm when I planted, then we had the weird heat wave, then at least at my house, about a week later we had hail & hard rain for 2 days. Then warm again, then drizzle a couple of days ago, and now we've finally settled in to June gloom. We burned off the gloom a bit early yesterday, and I have to say that the tomatoes have perked up a bit, so maybe yours will do the same this weekend.

Honestly, they look fine to me. I'd spray with daconil and sevin and find a way to kill the slugs (sluggo, etc). I wouldn't worry too much....
