Growing Tomatoes

what is eating my Lemon Pear???

This is the second Lemon Pear Heirloom tomato that I found that has been chomped on:( The leaf is the pic of the poop:( I looked and looked and cannot find the worm. What could this be? I have about 10 green Lemon Pears on the plant right now and I am afraid I am going to lose them all.

Please help me!

If you are referring to yellow pear tomatoes, I know that we can eliminate humans as the culprits, because this variety is inedible to humans.

That looks like caterpillar damage.

Taste is subjective, I love these little yellow pears----they're one of my favorite garden snacking tomatoes.

A couple weeks ago, I had, of all things, pill bugs eating the new growth on some smaller Echinopsis. Lucky, I caught on before they did too much damage. They only took out the growth points on two small offsets. Sevin dust dispatched them with haste. If you see these guys around, they will definitely munch on new growth if they have a chance. Scott, I have the same problem with Mockingbirds and with Thrashers. They will peck at all my fruit - citrus, stone fruit, figs. I have had success with mylar strips. My yard looks ridiculous, but at least I'm keeping fruit from the birds. Squirrels, however, are a different issue. I have resorted to poison bait stations as no amount of shooting with a pellet gun or humane trapping (and we have to then dispatch with the squirrels, as it is illegal to trap and release them here in San Diego county), has not made a dent in our ridiculous ground and tree squirrel population. It is a battle every year for stone fruit. We cannot have cats outside here because of our high coyote population. The cat would be gone in a day. Even though we have a VERY high number of predators here - hawks, kites, falcons, eagles, Great Horned owls, Barn owls, foxes, weasels, bobcats, coyotes, roadrunners, snakes galore (at least 4 or 5 different kinds), we still have a huge squirrel and rat problem. I even have a Barn own house on my property (which I think was used this year, haven't taken it down to check, but have a resident Barn owl we see often in the evening). Actually, one of my three Aussies has become the official "squirrelinator", having gotten 3 of them over the last 3 months. He is really smart and REALLY quick. Patty S.

What's eating my lemon balm?

I can't tell by the photo. Lemon Balm is in the mint family, so if you don't want it to spread, keep it in a pot. I have some in a large pot, and some in the ground, both in the shade. They come back every year, but when they have the little white flowers on, I remove that part of the plant and toss, or else there is lemon balm everywhere. Darlene

Taste is only subjective to a certain degree. I'm sure there are people out there who would enjoy a mouthful of dirt and could argue that taste is subjective, but I would have no problem stating that dirt, objectively, does not taste good. That being said, I would rather eat dirt than eat a yellow pear tomato.

Actually now that I put down landscape fabric and mulched all of my gardens I don't get to see the dirt any more, I kind of miss it. I also worry what might be hiding between the dirt and the landscape fabric. Glad you found the worm, now that its heating up in the Toronto area I expect the critters to start chomping on my garden too.

I will keep close watch on my Lemon Pear Tom and then I will officially report to you about the taste:) Once it is ripe if hopefully I get one so I can say for myself that they are terrible or they are delicious, deal?

Well I am apparently one of the weird ones that likes Yellow Pear tomatoes. One hint I have with them, is to try picking them at different points. If you pick them when they first turn yellow all over they do not taste as good as if you wait. They turn this darker yellow color and that is when they taste the best.
