Are you talking about the Phaseolus caracalla? There's another with fragrant white/mauve blooms called Vigna Caracalla or Corkscrew vine.

When I googled Vigna Phaleous nothing came up. My Snail Vine blooms like crazy, even indoors during the winter. It was about 10" when I got it and it took about 6 weeks until it reached blooming size. Mine is in a container. I wouldn't call it a water hog but I do keep it on the moist side, watering every other day during this heat (upper 90's). Less frequently when it's cooler and very little while it's inside over the winter. I feed it infrequently, maybe two or three times over the summer with a bloom booster. Even though I get loads of blooms I've never had a seed pod.

Well I thought it was Vigna Phaleous..but what you are showing is what I am talking about...if you found it as Phaleous Carcalla, then thats another name for it. But that is my snail vine. So..now I need to find out if I can get seeds by doing it the way I said. I guess I am just a week or so away from blooms. It is outside in the ground and I was told it would take over the yard if I let it. Up into the trees, etc...the leaves seem a lot smaller than I have seen with pictures of the blooms. But it is growing fast,but the leaves are very small. 3 lobes per 'leaf set',and small. I hope the flowers are as big as they look.

I could see this growing out of control in a warm climate. I have to cut mine back to get it in the house in the fall. The blooms aren't huge, about 2.5" across but they are very pretty. The Vigna Caracalla's flowers are larger and have a wonderful scent. I'm not sure what the natural pollinator is for these flowers. I do have ants crawling all over the flowers. They are usually trying to farm aphids but they are on the blooms even when there's no aphid in sight.

I found out it takes the big fat 'Bumble Bee',that I use to have up in the Northeast, to fert. this flower. The regular honeybee isn't big enough to get into the flower and get the pollen on its body to fert. the flower.To do it by hand is the answer. The ants do not do it. Someone else mentioned that they are just eating all the nectar that is in the flower. So when/if I get flowers...I am going to tear the blooms apart and fert. them myself with a small artist paint brush,and see if it works. Every site I go to says it makes so many seeds! Yet us plain ol' people that grow it say that there are next to no seeds! And most sites also say it can become like the Kudzu vine, and take over other yards! I hope! I need a super fast growing vine and one that grows that fast is fine by me. This area need some flowers! Get rid of the weed vines and replace it with my Snail Vine:) hehehehe.

Well it is growing..but not outrageous like everyone says. and no blooms yet. I think it is putting out bloom stems now. They are tiny,so I am not sure. Boy if I cant get this 'weed' to grow....I have lost my touch!

Hey Floridabear, good for you that it is growing! My sister, to whom I gave a seedling cursed me that it was a "wicked" vine that took over everything...nontheless, she fed it and fed it well...It finally went over her garage and carport, set seedling all over and bothered her so much she pulled it out.
That being said, she fed it fish emulsion, ironite, and rose food as it was near a climbing rose. She also watered it well, keeping the soil moist in a well drained area...
Then, I gave her a vigna caracalla...;)

Izzybelle...got another Caracalla vine lying around? Or some seeds? :)
