Why is my Morning Glory so Discolored and Sickly?

My morning glory has been growing famously, but, as you can see in the photos, the leaves are terribly discolored, and the plant overall seems sickly. I water and fertilize regularly and the vine is planted on a southern exposure where it gets 10+ of sunshine daily. You'll notice the leaves closest to the pot are bright green, but farther up they are pale yellow. Any advice?

It looks like my plants after the sun has been especially strong and intense and the leaves get burned. The plant eventually recovers. Do you see new growth, new leaves being made?

OH YES! You grow 1 morning glory plant, and you've got'em for years in massive doses! I have them growing into established plants and whatever is climbable. They're like an infestation. So in answer to your question and to add more graphics to the previous responses, pitch the mold - start seeds only if you want to sell the plants (and/or dig up all starters that have self seeded)to gain a profit or help control the vine population - and if you want less next year, pull down plants before seed pods dry and open up to drop 4-5 more seeds that will require repeated maintenance. I'm learning this again with a wormwood that shot a hundred babies from the mother root. - aargh! good luck. Deederbug

My Morning glory's first two leaves shrunk

ztzt, Are you talking about the "cotyledon leaves" or the first two true leaves? It is normal for the cotyledon leaves to shrivel up once the true leaves appear. Their main function is to store energy and feed the new seedling until the plant can begin photosynthesizing on it's own. Now if the true leaves are shriveling and no more have appeared to replace them, then I'd be concerned... Mike

Sorry I was in a hurry due to the word limit. I tried less water, I tried more water. Less sun and more sun. I tried small amounts of fertilizer. I cut more holes in the planter to make sure it was draining properly. The snails were nipping at them but that shouldn't kill off an entire vine so I treated for bugs and for fungus. Nothing seemed wrong with them other than some holes in the leaves (from the snails) and the fact they were dying. I believe it's Miracle Grow Garden Soil in the planter. The morning glories are the only thing in there except the trellis. I figured being vines they choke anything else out. Many of my neighbors have them basically growing wild. I have no idea why mine just died when they were doing so well. Any advice for next season would be appreciated.

When you water, is foliage getting wet while the sun is hot and shining on it? Looks like it could be from that. The leaves bottom right, looks like spider mite damage. Is there webbing on these plants?

The sun is certainly very intense.

I'll look for webbing, but I haven't seen any so far.

I always water only at the roots.

The dead leaves should be removed as they will only act as moisture wicks...

Are you sure the plants are getting enough water (?)...is there a water reservoir under the container (?)

I've had to water my plants almost every day due to the very hot temperatures...and the roots can only absorb various nutrients when the growing medium is damp enough (!)

There could be a deficiency of Iron and / or magnesium...

I use greensand for Iron (plus cation ion exchange properties) and langbeinite for Magnesium...and both sources are pro-biotic...
