How many are excited about 2010's garden?

Hi everyone! I know that we're at the beginning of 2009's fruiting, but I am really excited about next year's garden. I am planning on growing the following. Many thanks to Trudi and Wintersown for supplying the majority of my tomato seeds.

Next year will be the first time that I'll grow the majority of my plants from seed. This year I have two from seed and the rest from transplants from local stores.

Aunt Gerties Gold , Cherokee Purple, Big Rainbow, Brandywine "3 diffrent types", Kelloggs Breakfast, Pineapple, Jubilee, Mortgage Lifter, Mr. Stripey, Charlies Green, Banana Legs, Rutgers

Lemon Boy, Sweet tangerine, better boy, big boy, early girl, super boy, beefmaster, jetstar,

Cheeries:

Italian Ice, sungold, Super Sweet 100, ildi, tumbling tom, jelly bean

depending on where u are in nc maybe we could trade a few varieties so we wouldn't have to grow so much. I plan on either selling most of the hybrids and what I have left planting in friends gardens. I only have enough space here to grow 10 at the most so most likely Ill only grow heirlooms in my container farm.

I haven't started planning too much. I know I want to grow a few tomato varieties, some Carribean Red Peppers & some Tomatillos...that's all so far...lol.

Thanks for the compliments guys and gals. Lisa, those cukes were nothing special. I bought one 4 pack of Bonnie Burpless Hybrid and one 4 pack of Straight 8's from Lowes. They are planted in plain old field clay but I tilled it and added in some composted cow manure prior to planting. Some fish fertilizer when they were small and a little 10-10-10 when they were actively growing. We had hundreds of very large cucumbers from these 8 plants (4 on each side). That was year 1. Year 2 was a complete and total loss due to the cucumber beetles moving in. I had never even heard of them before until they hit, and they hit hard. By the time I diagnosed that it was cuke beetles spreading a virus it was a lost cause. I replanted the crop 3 times and each time they'd look healthy for a week or so and then suddenly start wilting and be dead days later. This will be year 3 and I'm going to try to keep a watchful eye and take preventative measures so that my cuke house will once again look like it did in these pictures. The woods behind it were cleared over the summer and the grass is kept mowed, I'm hoping the removal of that thick nearby brush and cover will greatly help. I also plan to use protective netting while they're young and growing as well as spraying if necessary. Maybe I can nip it in the bud early and get a good crop in between generations. Going from hundreds of delicious cukes to quite literally none in just one year was sooooo demoralizing. This year I actually built a large wood framed bed to fit the inside dimensions of the cuke house (roughtly 8' X 9' and 10 inches high) that I am currently growing cabbage in. If the cukes take off like they're supposed to it will be pretty much completely shaded underneath in the summer so not many veggies can grow there at that time but the cold weather crops can get plenty of sun there until then.

Pam, your zoo garden is such a lovely idea. how about Lamb's Ears (stachys)? And, sort-of an animal name, i have a "Rudolph" spurge in a sunny spot in my kids garden, which gets red tips that look like red noses in the winter. And for shadier spots, Bear's Breeches (Acanthus) and Tiarella "Tiger Stripe". Please post some pictures when Evan's zoo garden flowers! Your veggie bed sounds wonderful too. I have several veggies just planted in sunny spots around the garden, but without really preparing the soil well first, I am not sure they'll do that well. Maybe a veggie plot will be on my list of projects next year. This year, we want to finish our ivy removal project, we have just a couple of areas left. We also need to finish laying a patio. I'm excited about the finished products of both, but not the work involved! I'm most excited about my seed starting efforts so far -- most of these have been Wintersown. I have a lot of seedlings now and will try my best not to kill them at the planting out stage (which i did last year). I think my biggest goal for the year is to get my kids (aged 5 and 3) out into the garden more often. We planted peas, carrots and arugula a few weekends ago and they are very excited that all have sprouted!

What about them makes you say they are unreliable? After my order was placed it took a few days to get an email from the woman who operates the business and when she did I was informed that one of the varieties I ordered was out of stock, no big deal as I was refunded that amount. It took maybe a week and a half to two weeks for my order to arrive. When it did arrive there was a packet of freebies and that made me happy. There may have been a slight lapse from when I ordered till I got confirmation of my order, perhaps the shipping took a little longer than expected but from what I gather Amishland seeds is pretty much ran by this one lady and a few of her friends/farm enthusiast/farmers when they have the time to lend a helping hand. Now if your talking about seed germination rates or something like that then I will not be able to comment till spring time.

I'm getting out of control! I just ordered another, bigger, blueberry bush - Semi-Dwarf Northland, a Pixie Crunch dwarf apple tree, and some Purple Passion asparagus starts! I wanted to hold off on the asparagus since I don't even have the ground ready yet and since it lasts 20+ years, I need to put it in the right spot from the get-go, but I couldn't resist. I almost bought some strawberry plants but I don't have room for what I already have yet so I told myself, stop!! Deanna - I have a marseilles fig and I love it. I grow mine in a pot and put it in the garage every winter and the next spring it leafs out and grows fine. The buds on mine just broke this past week as a matter of fact. It's now on my back, 3-season porch waiting for the temps to warm a little bit more before I move it out onto the deck. My grandfather used to bury his fig every year and my brother does that with his, but I'd rather keep it in the pot and just take it in. Altho it's getting a little big now. I'm going to have to keep it at the size it's at now if I want to still be able to take it in every year! My back is going to be killing me by the time I get all that lawn dug up and the veggie bed in order! I always bite off more than I can chew every spring and you'd think I'd learn by now, but I never do!! The next spring I'm doing the same thing again! Lisa

I'm excited to do a lot better next year. This year 3 of my plants went into very old potting soil cause I didn't know any better and are not doing very well. They are producing but are small and not as healthy as the others. Next year I'll know not to do that. But I have another 6 plants that are doing well.

I am glad I am not the only one looking ahead. I only have small green fruits right now, so I am dreaming about next year until the ripe fruits start rolling in. Then I will be thinking about recipes!
I know next year I want to definitely use a fan on my seedlings. I do not want to be tempted again by variety seed packs. I want to know what I am planting instead of needing to plant way too many plants to make sure I get a good variety.
I have already ordered seeds for next year, and cannot wait to try Opalka and Bloody Butcher. I also have a couple of whites I want to try. I thought they might be good in a fruit salsa. I am also looking forward to trying a few indoors under lights this winter.

I'm ambitious. It will be year three in the desert. Last year I planted a half dozen plants. This year I have sixty or so going that have been blessed by three unexpected weeks of perfect weather at a perfect time for a great fruit set.

Next year I'm planning on taking out a bit of the lawn and getting up to 200 plants, maybe 250, Lord willin' and the creek don't rise. So it will probably go over 100 degrees in April and stay there until everything collapses.

As far as varieties. I'm going to have quite a bit of mystery growing because I have a lot of no name seed. I think I will enjoy that.

I'm also going to take my time selecting specific varieties from the input of other desert growers who've had success. Hybrids will be at a minimum.

Meh, I'm still focused on this year's garden. Up here in Iowa City, the tomatoes are still just blooming. I really like my approach this year -- I strung some overhead wires and hung strings with vine clips that hold up the plants. I also pruned off lower suckers to encourage the plants to only bush out higher up where the fruit is easier to pick.

I am certainly planning already, especially since my spring harvest is about over, except for the cherries. I have several that I want to try next year.

OP's: Boondocks, Brandywine Landis Valley Strain, Burgundy Traveler, Cherokee Chocolate, Gary'O Sena, Goose Creek, Grub's Mystery Green, Heidi, Mexico, Peron.

I will probably try Bloody Butcher and Matina as my "earlies" next year instead of Stupice. Maybe Moskvich too.

Hybrids: Brandy Boy, Big Beef, Heatwave II (surprisingly wonderful this spring), Jetsetter, Moreton and Ramapo. Maybe also a new Momotaro arriving from Japan.

I'm trying several other varieties as a fall crop, and if they're good they could be repeats in the spring. It's too early to tell, but this is just a starter list anyway.

After the veggie garden was in and the bigger winter sown flowers were planted, I organized my seed stash.

I have 75 varieties of tomatoes on my 2010 grow list and fall trading hasn't yet begun!! I'm certain my grow list will first double, then triple and somehow be reduced to 50 varieties. I am vowing to only trade seeds, and not buy any.

I am hoping I'll adore some of the varieties I am growing this year, putting additional strain on my list...

I need acreage!!

So glad to hear I am not the only psycho getting pumped up about trying new varieties in 2010.. when I haven't harvested my first 2009 tomato.

I think it started when some enabler posted that Baker Creek was having free shipping, which made me order Striped Roman, Gold Medal and Lumpy Red. My husband was flabergasted when I told him I ordered more seed; he said "But you have so much seed already!". Clearly he doesn't GET IT. :)

From seed I already have, I want to try these which I did not have room for this year:

New Big Dwarf
Orange Russian 117 (tried a few this year - didn't germinate)

I'm really getting excited about trying other varieties next year. I have only a few this year:

San Marzano
Fourth of July
Early Girl
Brandywine
Cherokee Purple
Goliath
Early Goliath

I wanted to get Sungold again but dh was shouting that I had too many tomatoes already! Since he is the planter, hoer, waterer etc., I humored him.

I do have a whiskey barrel I put a tomato in each year. I've had Fourth of July, Yellow Pear, Brandywine, Sungold and this year one of the Cherokee Purples went into it.

I want to try more containers next spring and start my own seed. I have access to lots of 5 gal buckets and heavy duty plastic sacks so I can try some different varieties without dh whining about too many in the garden.

I'm thinking about these because of what people have said about them in this forum:

Dear Ann in MT,
I want to try more containers next spring and start my own seed. I have access to lots of 5 gal buckets and heavy duty plastic sacks so I can try some different varieties without dh whining about too many in the garden. ~~~ For the record, I spend many mutiples the time on 19 container plants than I do on the nearly 1000sq.' of space my 3 gardens provide. Prep, plant, string soaker hose with timer and mulch. Done. I just went through a period of avg. 6 BER fruits per day on the potted plants. Two whole days with none, had me thinking it was finally over but minutes ago, a storm came through, blowing over 2, 5' container plants and knocking off 10 green toms. UGH!! No damage to those in ground. Obviously, I use containers and will continue to do so but I don't find them better, or easier, or cheaper. The additional watering chores alone are enough but the increaced risk of BER and storm damage are really getting to me this yr. Were we not in the mkt. for a new place and wanting to assure the ability to take at least some of our crop with us, I would not have near so many. I'm not sure yet if I'm excited. This year I nearly finished my fenced out 20x28' raised bed kitchen garden, with new trellises, pavers between beds, even a mailbox to store my hand tools. Having it in such good order, next year will be a breeze. I'd talked to DH a month or two ago about expanding the garden and he agreed that I could tear up a section of sod outside of my "proper" garden for storage/space demanding crops like corn, onions, winter squash and sauce tomatoes.

However, I just landed a BIG promotion, which is great, but will require a fair amount of travel during the summer. I am also hoping that I have my horse figured out, and if he continues to do well health-wise, I will be showing him next summer, which leaves little time for gardening. Garden expansion plans are definitely out for now. With the raise I'm getting, we should be able to move to a nicer house with a shorter commute, but that also means abandoning the garden and starting all over again in 2011 or so. Sigh. On the plus side, I should be able to get some hoop houses set up this fall, and hopefully use them for an earlier tomato crop next spring.

As far as tomatoes go, I'm thinking next year will see the following:
