too late to start from seed?

I just got my plot worked out this year and I was wondering if it is too late to start plants from seed? I live in Dallas and have a plot covered with landscaping cloth to kill the weeds. I was thinking of cutting little holes in the cloth to plant in and topping up with compost and leaf litter and mulch. But I don't have a lot of money for plants this year. I do have some seeds for things like cucumbers, zukes, kales, a couple of tomatoes( I don't think they are Texas friendly varieties though) Squash, carrots. Have I missed the window and need to get starts at this point or can I still direct sow some of these. Thanks in advance!
