Does this MG have a name?

I had this pop up in the garden last year and found another today. I don't know if it's a variety I don't recall planting or if it's a cross with one of the hige varieties that I have had. The central portion opens a bit more but I took these pics very early in the day. Whatever it is I like it.

Karen it looks like something happened to the bloom on an aomoraski.

Where all the blooms on this vine the same?

All the blooms look like this. Same thing last year as well. I have a few different solid color hige type plants. Maybe one cross pollinated with a Blizzard or something?

MG Potting Mix or MG Garden Soil?

Definitely use the potting mix as it is properly formulated for container growing, and usually contains a mix of peat, perlite, lime, etc. Containers need good drainage and the problem with soil, garden dirt, compost or such is that it will compact over time and water log the soil. Bad for little seeds and roots! If you're going to do a lot of containers you can mix your own potting mix, or buy big bag(s) or a bale. I've used several brands of potting mix, but last year bought a big 3.8 CF bale of Pro-mix from the local Ace hardware which special ordered it and cost about $32. It is a nice mixture with no sticks or stones, although dealing with a compressed bale is not as easy as the bags, which are fluffier. I still have about 1/2 the bale left so there is plenty for this year!

Baci, did you do a trade with someone in China perhaps in 2003 or 2004? I have that too and that is where it came from for me. It was NOT what it was supposed to be though and I understood that his plant$ were grown in pots and NOT open pollinated so I was surprised. Actually I was disappointed because it was supposed to be one of those fancy ones that has a fully double blossom with white edges. The flowers on this one are quite huge, probably 5 inches across. Before anyone gets excited and asks for $eeds,I planted them close to a bunch of other vining plant$ and many other kinds of MG so won't be able to separate seeds with any accuracy at all. ladyrose65 - The seed characteristics are important to help in ascertaining the botanical identity of of Family , Genus , species and even cultivar The seeds are usually a better indicator of Family , Genus and species than cultivar (in general) but some cultivars reliably produce seeds having characteristics that occur with a high enough frequency that they can factor in substantially to help ascertain the identity of certain crosses. The Candy Pink is an Ipomoea nil that happens to have light seeds , although most Ipomoea nil has darker seeds. The Split Personality is Ipomoea purpurea with dark seeds , although there are many varieties of I,purpurea with light seeds. Ipomoea species (with very rare exception) will only cross fertilize with other plants within the same species...so, Ipomoea purpurea will cross with other Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea nil will cross with other Ipomoea nil... The seed color is often a reflection of what color the flower will be , but not always... So, there are certain generalities regarding the seed color and the resultant plants produced but there are also plenty of exceptions... Hope that is of some help... TTY,... I had some like that a few years ago from volunteers. I surmised that it was a result of Gypsy Bride crossing with "Emma's Gift", which was the only other purpurea in that area the previous year. None like that so far this year.

Ipomoea purpurea
Flaked Feathered Morning Glory 'Aomurasakihigesibori'
Additional info: (Split Petal Flaked, Flaked Hige)

I think "flaked hige" or "split petal flaked" are the most practical descriptors for those who aren't very comfortable with Romaji...

Thanks Ron. That name is certainly a mouthful! lol I don't remember planting anything with that name but honestly that doesn't mean anything. I'm not the greatest when it comes to labeling my plants.

On another subject, your recommendations worked. I have an open bloom on my MG tree this am and there's loads more buds that should be open soon!

I just found another plant that's putting out blooms with that odd fringe. This looks like a common I. purpurea until you look at the back.

Ron here's the first bloom that finally held on my MG tree.
