since I wrote this earlier today, I've been told by the person who sent me the seeds for the last two pics that there was some dispute last year over the name for those as well. It turns out they are probably "Split Personality", not Sunrise Serenade. The darker one I'm beginning to think might be Grandpa Ott's, and the striped one possibly Ao Muraski Johanten Shibori or one commonly called Emma's Gift. Still would like input if anyone has info on them.

Looks to me like Ipomoea 'Tie Dye' and Ipomoea 'Star of Yelta'. The latter reseeds itself profusely in my yard, almost to the point of being a weed. A pretty weed, but a weed nonetheless.

Eric, thank you, I wondered about Tie Dye myself, having seen some online pics.The pics I just googled of Star of Yelta does look exactly like what I have. The rate at which all MGs send out runners, let alone reseed, does give them a "nuisance" label to many people. I have had to cut mine back tremendously in the past, and they have choked out other plants in my yard. Still love 'em though. Appreciate the input!

Your first 3 pictures are of Emma's Gift/aomaraski and the odds are the seeds you got for this morning glory originally came from either me or from someone I traded seeds with or sent seeds out as a BEAP offer. I have been sending out these morning glory seeds for at least 5 years now, either as trades or BEAP offers.

I've been growing this morning glory for 6 years now, every since I received my original seeds from a GW member that does lots of morning glory crosses and this was one of her stable crosses that she sent me seeds of.

Originally she called it "Emma's gift" and later added the additional name "aomaraski" to her morning glory.

It is a very prolific grower either in the ground or in a pot. I usually grow one plant in a 10 inch pot with miracle grow potting mix and let it grow up one side of the railing on my front stairs.

It also will produce an abundance of seeds. Last years vine gave me more than 400 seeds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

No 2 blooms are alike and you will get dozens of variations in the blooms from the typical streaks to more solids to almost total solid to just about pure white and anything in between.

These 2 pics of the same 2 blooms how wide a variety of blooms. the one on the left looks like it almost comes from a different plant but it is not only the same vine, but these are both growing beside each other on the same stem.

Your 4th and 5th pictures are morning glory Star of Yelta. Another prolific bloomer and produces tons of seeds as well.

I have grown both star of yelta and grandpa otts and the blooms appear to be identical too me. Some years I have found that grandpa otts does not grow as tall or as full as star of yelta and other years they appear to be the same.

Your last 2 pictures are morning glory split personality. There is no dispute over the difference between split personality and sunrise serenade.

Sunrise Serenade is a hige morning glory, also known as a feathered morning glory. Hige morning glory blooms have many splits in the petal of the blooms that can go all the way down to the throat, giving it the appearance of feathers for blooms, hence the feathered name to the morning glory.

Morning glory split personality is not a hige/feathered morning glory, but rather has the appearance of splits in the petal shape of the bloom that gives it a different appearance than the typical bloom of a morning glory vine.
Sometimes the splits in the bloom can be more pronounced than at other times, hence the term split in the name of the morning glory, split personality.

It is not a bloom that I particularly like so I have only grown it one year.

I agree with 'eyes' ID on all of your Morning Glories, and the fact they are ALL Ipomoea purpurea.

Also, 'eyes' explanation on 'Emma's Gift' MG is correct. This was waaaaay back [remember that Fran. . . lol] before I really knew the correct name which is: Aomurasakisibori and is also commonly referred to as: Bluish-Purple Flaked Shibori, which is what it is.
Ao = Blue
Murasaki = Purple
Sibori = FLAKED

When Shibori is used to describe a purpurea means it is of the FLAKED LINE Morning Glory.

Shibori is spelled with an 'h' when it is a stand-alone word. It is spelled without the 'h' sibori when used as a suffix.

I also agree that your photos #3 and #4 are 'Grandpa Otts'.
The first post in the explanatory link doesn't contain the color feature check-list that was mentioned in some of the later posts. This included that a medium to dark blue-purple purpurea with reddish-fuchsia rays is a Grandpa Otts-Type. A medium to dark-blue purpurea with darker bluish purple rays is more of a Star of Yelta-Type. So, although the background color can be the same in Grandpa Otts and Star of Yelta it is the color of the pigmentation along the primary fold that distinguishes between the two.

Ron, in his explanatory thread emphasized the importance of selecting for the most typey Grandpa Otts and Star of Yelta to perpetuate these types. Otherwise, you wind up with a lot of plants which are not clearly distinguishable as either type.

Your photos #5 and #6 are, in fact, Crimson Rambler.

On the Split-Personality, you can see some of my photos at this link and notice how deep the splits are in what I grew. Really Pretty!

Emma, I will post over the next few days the next pics of blooms from what you call Crimson Rambler. I would appreciate it if you could again take a look, because the pic you had posted on Dave's Garden does actually look very much like a bloom off my "Split Personality". I'm confused now, after seeing your pic. I want to be sure to label these properly in the future, and honestly I am confused after seeing that pic, it looks so much like one of mine.

I sure do remember those first seeds of "Emma's gift" you sent me, along with tons of other morning glory seeds and other seeds.

You do know that it is all your fault now, that I am hooked on the Japanese type morning glory vines and, of course, your new crosses that you do. Got some of them already planted out for this year.

The question is will they grow for me? Tough to get a thing to grow when all you get is rain, rain and more rain, cool temps in the 60's and, if we are lucky, we get a few hours of sun once a week.
Been like this almost the whole month of May.

I still can't find a difference in star of yelta and grandpa otts. Could be that seeds I had of grandpa otts was actually star of yelta though.

The more I have looked at the last picture, the more I think that is not split personality, but is Crimson Rambler.

Split personality is not one I grow, it was and OK bloom, but there is something in that vine that tastes wonderful to chipmunks. Mind you there where plenty of other MG vines for them to eat, but they always made a B line for split personality. It never got a chance to grow more than 3 feet before it was taken out for snacks.

A friend of mine is a sucker for punishment, she has the exact same problem and keeps trying every year. So far she's had 25 vines of it eaten, come back and eaten a second and a third time.

I really do miss posting on GW, so maybe I can get the hang of it again. You do get spoiled on Daves because it is so easy to post and keep up with the Threads. Maybe 'some day' they will do that on GW. It is also so much easier to post photos on Daves too.

I do believe you must be getting the rain that was meant for Texas . . . lol
We need rain SO bad. My water system is going almost all day to keep my plants from frying. It is going to be another 100+ today. Next week it is supposed to cool down to the 90's.

Fran, I don't know how many different MGs you are growing, but if it isn't that many it may be worth some effort to save them. Do they seem to be ok once they reach maturity from your little critters?

Here is a suggestion for your MGs.
This will not look so pretty, but at least you can keep the little critters out of them. Put up chicken wire around them. Then, when they are strong and mature, you can remove the wire. Also, if they are in pots, maybe you can move them somewhere so they don't get as much rainfall. Of course, if they are in the ground - forget that idea!

It would also seem worth the effort to put up some kind of tint over them if they are pretty much in the same area - again to keep the everyday rainfall out.

Just thoughts . . .

There has to be something you can do.
Maybe others will offer some other suggestions. Seems such a pity to go to the time to get them started, then just get beat up with the rain.
May be time to invest in what I call a temporary Greenhouse ???
Not that difficult, nor that expensive.
The Greenhouse plastic is also not expensive.

If you are interested let me know and I'll get some specifics from Jerry on how he put mine up.

The end of fall/early winter, he is going to start building me a 'real' Greenhouse. I need one because of all of my tropicals that I have to keep in containers, plus so many other plants that I need to have room to over-winter.
