browning morning glories

I have some new morning glory vines - heavenly blue...that are more white with a little lavender strip. Anyway, they were planted in May and grew quite nice and flowered, but the vines and leaves are browning over. Any idea what could be wrong?

They are planted against a chain link fence, behind some irises and hydrangeas. They get Eastern exposure, full sun about 8 hours a day. Regular soil, I try not to fertilize them because I heard they don't like it.

Any idea what is up?

How hot does the metal of the chain get? I had a MG in a pot at the corner of a metal gazebo last summer, and it got burned when the metal heated up in the sun. The MGs that were three feet away but on a wooden fence did great -- same sun, same water, etc. It was definitely the heat from the metal that did in the MG at the gazebo.

Is the ENTIRE vine browning, or is it "spotty" (as in just where it comes in contact with the metal)?

I live in the Sacramento, CA region and have been growing morning glories on chain-link fence for years. It gets over 100 degrees quite often in the summer. The large metal posts get hot, but it doesn't seem to affect my plants too much, especially once the leaves start shading the posts. The chain-link doesn't get that warm at all. I can put my hands on it with no discomfort. Because of the spacing of the wires, my thought is that it functions as a radiator to disperse the heat quite nicely...

Mike now I envy YOU! I have a variegated maroon looking MG and I have only found ONE seed pod! I think they do not produce any :-( But yes...next year your fence will be covered by all the seeds that start growing from the ground up lol VERY PRETTY Lucy

H. Old Glory in it's morning glory...

My Old Glory is in a tub with two other fairly golden hosta. Until yesterday, it sat in this location where it gets morning sun and all day sun actually. But now I moved those golden hosta into the Back40 for safety beneath a shade covering. Not UP yet, but it soon will be. Meanwhile, I'll take another photo of Old Glory to give it individual attention. Yours is looking might fine.

I only have experience with Heavenly Blue MG's and they did not do well in a pot. They did indeed insist on climbing and then I think they just ran out of root space because they suddenly stopped growing and flowering.

Morning glories are a lovely old-fashioned vining trumpet-shaped flower available in many colors and flower sizes, they are invaluable for covering an unsightly fence or creating seasonal screening as a living wall. Morning glories are excellent reseeders; so good at reseeding that if you plant them once you may never have to plant them again. To reduce their reseeding capability remove all vines after they are killed by frost, bag them, and set them out in the trash. Composting the plants cannot assure that all seeds will be killed. Morning glories produce clusters of round seed pods suspended from their vines. When they are mature the pods turn papery brown and are brittle. The mature seeds are dark-brown to matte-black, wedge shaped, and sized between and 1/8" and 1/4" long; a few, such as Hawaiian Wood Rose, are slightly larger. Seed collection is easy. To collect the seeds simply clasp the papery-brown pods with one hand and crumble the seeds into a cup held below with your other hand. Immature seeds will not come free. Dry the seeds for about a week on an open plate before packing, allow for more drying time if the seeds are large and/or the weather is damp.
