Caterpillars make tomatoes ripen faster

The tomatoes in my garden just won't ripen, probably because it drops down into the 50s every night. The only exceptions are ones that a type of caterpillar, green or gray in color, about an eighth of an inch thick and three quarters of an inch long have eaten their way into, attacking from the stem end. These are the only ripe large tomatoes I have so far. Either they are attracted to ripe tomatoes, or the damage they do to a green tomato makes it ripen. There is only one worm per tomato, so it makes me think some kind of butterfly or moth deposited one egg on each tomato that grew into this caterpillar. Since I have no other ripe tomatoes if the damage wasn't too bad I have been cutting out the part of the tomato damaged by the caterpillar and eating the still good part. I don't want to use pesticides so just hope my plants produce enough tomatoes that I still have some good ones after these caterpillars and roly polys do their damage.
