Yes, gardenguru1950 is right, it looks like Aizoaceae, Cylindrophyllum, Delospermum, maybe even in the family Portulacaceae. These are plants from mainly dry and sunny areas, they are a succulent. They need plenty of sun (expose it gradually to bright sun over a week or so, because it might sunburn if put under the sun quickly, as it has been in the shade for a long time). And don't water it as much, let the soil dry slightly before watering again.

Amongst hydrangeas, Hydrangea paniculata -hardy to Zone 3- is a possibility where you live but the leaves just do not appear to be heart-shaped enough so it could be weed. I also expect to see a stem with leaves originating opposite to each other and I could not "see" that in the pictures. If unsure, wait to see if it blooms. Ken, salsify is a wind blown seed. The plants are biennial and when they bloom in the second year, they make a huge blow ball. Kind of looks like dandelion on growth hormones! The seeds blow and can land elsewhere much like dandelions. Having grown salsify MANY times in the veggie garden, I can tell you it is not a reseeder at all. Birds do not spread the seed, they eat it. These are actually fun plants to have if you are a bird watcher. Finches and other small seed-eaters will tear apart the still green seeds heads and eat the seeds. I rarely - if ever - get to see the blow ball as the seeds never get a chance to completely mature. I always hope to collect seeds but would have to bag the heads for that to happen. It is not a garden thug and I suspect most would welcome the pretty flower or the tasty root to their gardens. Albeit if it is in bloom, the root has gone beyond optimal quality for eating as that would be in the first year of its growth. FataMorgana
