Indian Hawthorne

I have a few Indian Hawthornes in a hedge full of them that have been declining for a coupla years, we have treated for any disease we could think of..

Symptoms, outer leaves turn red then fall off, very little new foiliage growth, however good flower & berry production.

Anyone have experience with this?

do you have deer? My neighbor has Indian Hawthornes and each August the deer strip them down. I used to think they were dying, but they do come back in the spring.

I was quoting from a nursery site. However, this plant seems to be introduced by Garden Debut. Link below. There's not really much information on there. I do not know where to look up plant patent information. Usually though if a plant is bred specifically for hardiness, I would expect some information about that. Indian Hawthorns are not reliably hardy in zone 7A, and to see one listed as zone 6 is amazing. SO.....I would rather hear from someone who has actually grown the plant in their zone 7 garden (especially after THIS winter!) than trust a grower or plant introducer who may have been rushed in getting the plant to market before rigorously trialing it. For example, look at the many gardenias hitting the market that are listed as zone 6. I don't know of ANY gardenias that will not be damaged in zone 6 without major protection. Totally agree Abelias would make a great alternative. Our 'Edward Goucher's fared much better in the dry heat of 2011 that roasted the 'Ballerina' Indian hawthorns in the same bed. We replaced those roasted ones with Autumn sage (Salvia greggii), which stays mostly evergreen in 8a and has intermittent blooms between nice flushes in the spring and fall. A different look with lots of color options in the 1.5 to 3 ft size range. Does okay with partial shade, but "reaches" for light more than the Abelias or Indian hawthorns did; so tends to get lopsided in spots like the north side of a fence where it moves in and out of shadow over the solar year.

The berries are small and not very juicy, and usually the birds eat them all. I don't remember Raphiolepsis having the "messy" label attached. I wouldn't have a big bush overhanging a patio because they HURT if you step on them barefoot.

[For some reason I could not enter a comment in OP's thread.] In Central Texas Indian hawthorn benefits from improved soil. Mulch is indispensable. They typically need supplemental irrigation for the first three years, thereafter during periods of extended drought. The easiest way to ensure adequate moisture is with drip irrigation on a timer. Then you'll never have to ask each other, "Did you water the Indian hawthorns today?" There are at least 20 cultivars (varieties) of Indian hawthorn out there, so if you want an exact match, you'll need to contact a reputable landscaper experienced with the species, unless you're fortunate enough for an expert here to ID your cultivar based on photos.

I had problems with mine. I cut off a branch and took into calloways. Turns out they weren't getting enough water.

Oddly, mine did not flower at all this spring. Weird. I wonder if it is the weather. No rain. Maybe none of them are getting enough water. I do have the same issue with the leaves turning red and falling off.

Mine haven't bloomed yet either, but don't expect them to until next month.

I wondered! Mine put out one dinky flower. I threatened to shovel prune it. I would've thought my threat worked until carrie mentioned they bloom next month. :)

Mine are heavily blooming right now, but maybe I have a different kind than y'all

Mine do, PJ, but I don't remember the variety I have as they have been with me for almost twenty years and I have slept since then. They are pretty and green and budded so I shall just wait for the blooms.

mine have new leaves but I didn't see any buds. dbannie, you're lucky to have early bloomers!
