Hi, I have short red daylily. They're named, but I never wrote it down 5 years ago, when I first bought it. I also have Physostegia (Obedient plant/False dragonhead) purple and flowers late in September till frost here in zone 5. I've tried to start Blackberry lily from seed, but no luck. According to Sunset's Western Garden Book, Victorville is in Sunset Climate Zone 10: "High Desert Areas of Arizona and New Mexico." Probably should add California to that list as well, given the map! Here are the main parts of the Zone description: "This zone consists mostly of the 3,300- to 56,000-foot-elevations in parts of Arizona and New Mexico. It also includes parts of southern Utah and Nevada, and adjacent California desert. Zone 10 has a definite winter season--75 to more than 100 nights below 32 deg F (0 deg C). That favors deciduous fruits, though late frosts can work against apricot crops. In Albuquerque, Mew Mexico, and Benson and Kingman, Arizona, average winter minimums ranged from 32 to 23 deg F (0 to -5 deg C). Lows of 25 to 22 deg F (-4 to -6 deg C) often come in April, with extremes averaging 10 to -10 deg F (-12 to -23 C). The cold winter season calls for spring planting, unlike Zones 12 and 13, where most planting is done in fall. "More rainfall and less heat distinguish Zone 10 from Zone 11. Annual rainfall averages 12 inches, with more falling in the east, notably less in the west. Most plants in these areas benefit from the extra summer water. The Pecos River drainage receives more precipitation in summer than in winter. Growing seasons are very long, running from 185 to 225 days." Sunset recommends bougainvillea in zones 5, 6, 112-17, 19, 21-24; H1, H2. But not 10. You will need to see which cultural requirements of a bougainvillea you can provide and which ones you'll need to figure out hot to provide. Good luck! in el cerrito

Hello all, Does anyone know where I can buy some small Bougainvillea plants? I ve checked the major garden centres and they all have the big ones which are quite expensive. Alternatively...if anyone has one that needs a trim ...I would be glad to get some cuttings from it :-) (I heard that they can be rooted easily). Thanks S

Houston has enough freezing weather to keep them from getting giant like you see in the tropics. Galveston is much warmer and we have some huge specimens here. My Aunt had one that the trunk was bigger than my waist, Ike killed that one. Go to Houston Garden center, they are 70% off. Right now they are going to be a bit hard to recognize because they have trimmed them back. Walk around the edges and look for the plants that are just nubs sticking out of the pot. I usually pick up a couple for Jim every year to turn into bonsai. You'll probably have to check the label. You can also check Jimbos in Santa Fe, he had some nice big specimens earlier in the year, I haven't been there in a month or so and not sure if he still has them. Tally Ho!
