Carole, Your choice of camellia is excellent, they can take alot of sun. I was surprised how much sun my sasquanna takes. The only concern I have is it will encase an air conditioner, heating unit. They can give off alot of hot air in the summer, so I don't know how that would effect anything you plant there. Camellias grow rather slowly, but you can probably buy one already esparilied already, sometimes they have nice sized ones at nurseries, but they are pricey. If it is by an entrance, and you are willing to trim a vine mabey, another suggestion might be a confederate jasmine, an evergreen one is confederate jasmine "Madison", and they sell them at nurseries in the spring. They have beautiful very fragrant flowers from April thru June. But the camellia would be gorgeous, if you can plant it by an air conditioning unit.

Would you consider using Bougainvillea? It has topiary potential, comes in many colours, repels intruders, is fairly drought tolerant, responds to pruning. Another possible is using Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka'. A bit 'retro' but may suit your house/yard. If you remove the leading branches then it will widen more than growing tall. Acca sellowiana is a possible - then you could eat the results, too! It has the plus of being evergreen and the minus of liking some water over the summer.

Will passion vine grow in zone 4a as a perennial? I know that P. incarnata is one of the hardiest, but not sure it's hardy to that zone. If you try honeysuckle, try to get Lonicera sempervirens or a cultivar of it. They are gorgeous and attract hummingbirds, and will do fine in part shade. Also, Sweet Autumn Clematis would do fine on a chain link, too. It flowers in late summer to early fall, with masses of tiny white blooms that are very fragrant. Ampelopsis brevipedunculata (porcelain vine, and I think the name may have been changed by the all too underworked taxonomists), has mottled green/white foliage and produces berries that are purple, blue, white, hence the name "porcelain". It is in the grape family. Aristolochias are vines that do well in part shade, too. They are old-fashioned vines that people used to shade their porches way back when..... A. macrophylla would be the best for you (big leaf pipevine). You may also be lucky enough to get some pipevine swallowtails to lay eggs on them. They do flower, but rather the flowers are usually hidden by the huge heart-shaped foliage. It is called pipevine because the flowers are shaped like meershaum pipes. You could also use other clematis varieties that tolerate partial shade, but I find they do not really provide good coverage of a fence. While your perennial vines are growing and filling in, you can plant some annuals back there, like sweet peas. Those should do well for you in your climate, and there are so many different colors available on today's market. They usually flower in spring. I don't know if you will get a sustained period of heat long enough for morning glories to bloom in your zone. Canary flower would probably do well for you as it likes cooler weather. Steelglow, How big is the fence? Do you think you could afford a reed or inexpensive bamboo fence to cover it up? You just wire it right onto your chain link fence, it's easy. Check at big box stores and online for one of those fences. I had native honeysuckle, it was beautiful coverage for 3 years, I had to move, but my neighbor, like yours with just lawn, was so sweet and allowed me to trim the vine on her side when ever I needed to. We were friends. THe vine will grow towards the sun, and if the sun comes from your neighbors side, it will grow that way. If you don't want your neighbor upset about the vine hanging a couple feet over onto his side, opt for the reed fence, and plant shrubs in front of it on your side. But, if you don't mind trimming it, yes, it is a good privacy screen and will grow rather quickly for you. Train it onto the fence, they don't twine like other vines. Good Luck!
