Hi all! Hi Mike! I bought a tree form of the Asian wisteria about 4 years ago. It is in a large pot, I root prune it every other year. It is extremely fragrant, smells nice. No cat pee. I cut a few pieces off a couple of years ago and rooted them in water in the winter. They bloomed in spring. In water. I took them to PA for my best friend to plant she wanted a beast to climb about 50 ft of fence. LOL! She loves it. I can't plant my tree in the ground. I couldn't stop it from spreading, it is unreal. I still have it though, and it is doing just fine in a pot. I also bought a Blue Moon wisteria about 5 years ago from a well known online vine nursery, It is still alive, hasn't bloomed, and doesnt grow very much. If it smells like cat pee I'm throwing it in the trash. But, the Asian doesn't, in case anyone wants to know. You can keep it in a pot, just root prune it at least every other year. And remove the pot off the ground about once a month in the growing season so it doesn't root in the ground and spread that way, Or perhaps just place it on cement pavers or a patio. They are beautiful, aren't they?

We took down our old metal awning support this year. We had grown wisteria on the awning support (patio sized 10 x 12') for 15 years. Apparently patio sized awnings were hip in the 1970s when our rancher was built. The awning supports were very sturdy: my 200 lb. teenage boys can swing on them without bending. The wisteria trunks were 8-12 inches in diameter after 15 years. During the summer months, if it rained, the wisteria had to be trimmed every two weeks. Each trimming filled two trash cans (you can't compost it). It grew up under the roof shingles in a week if we didn't keep it cut far back from the house. I pruned according to the literature and got flowers for three different years out of the 15 years. Still don't know why it flowered or why not. This year we replaced the old awning supports and wisteria with a wooden pergola and we don't miss it! I do have three sprouts that survived on my swap list if anyone wants a vigorous twining climber! They are about five feet tall at this point.

you can also train it to support itself! Very pretty to arch over the opening to the arbor...two ways: as it suckers up from the base, braid it loosely and stake it with a tall piece of bamboo (which can eventually deteriorate, or a u-post that is to the side and be sure to remove it before it becomes part of the vine; then you can also train it to arbor into/onto itself, about the same way...tying it with jute or green cotton "kitchen crochet yarn", something that will naturally dispose of itself. The important thing to know is that wisteria always wants to grow up, it does get massive and can get extremely heavy...heavy enough to crush lattice work

I was wonderinging if blue moon is the hardiest of all wisteria and if I'm able to plant and let it grow in a large pot on my deck up the pergola. I heard that it had to be planted in the ground??
