They look fine, just keep the moisture levels even so you don't get any fruit crack, and fertilize!! I can't believe how many organic gardeners think that some composted manure is plenty to feed a heavy setting vegetable plant. I don't know if you garden organically, but I keep seeing underfertilized plants on the forums. Remember, at this stage, miracle grow is *NOT* evil, and if you don't want to pay an arm and a leg for some organic ferts, they are perfectly fine to use. Also, at this stage, a balanced fertilizer would do you well, like 10(N)-10(P)-10(K). Tomato growers will tell you to stay away from applying too much nitrogen, because N promotes the plant to set more leaves and less fruit. They say that even a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 shouldn't be used, and you should go with 5-10-10 or something that has less N in it. But once you have fruit set, I'm of the opinion that if you were using a specialty tomato fertilizer that had less N, with the growing fruit being very nutrient dependent, you should switch to a balanced fertilizer after you have achieved a heavy enough fruit set, to compensate for the extra nutrient needs. I could be crazy though. Your tomatoes look fine, it's not a disaster, just be thankful that you don't have japanese beetles eating everything in sight. Norh53 I'm in Saskatchewan. I went out this morning to check the tomatoes. I only have two plants this year. I'm starting to get something, but it's difficult to tell at this stage whether it's gray mold or late blight. The stems have a few darkened spots and most leaves are perfectly fine. I brought in 3 partially ripe tomatoes to monitor as they ripen. I guess if I have late blight I'll know soon enough. We've had such a terrible season this year that my patience is waning, so I'm tempted to just pull them up and get rid of them. However, then I won't recognize symptoms next year if I don't watch these for a while. Right?

I agree with it being a soil problem, but I don't use any commercial fertilizer. We have cows, and I use (hot) composted manure. By hot I mean 2-3 years composted. I know some people will go OMG, it should be 10 years at least, but this is the way my babba did it so I continue in her footsteps. I have never had better tomatoes, onions and bean. Yes I get alot of leaves on my tomatoes but I trim. Right now I'm adding it to beds that have been cleared in prep for spring. I add a lot to the beds it always flattens out over the winter, I have never burned anything this way. I do agree with variety as well. Cheryl

The way tomatoes are growing here now, and barely ripening, I may wind up with a several bushels of green tomatoes.. In the last week, I have only seen about 6 tomatoes get ripe enough to pick. Thats from 60 tomato plants all loaded and bending their support poles.. This week, the overnight temps are now down to the lower 50's already.. Gee, where did summer go??
