Vine for Huge Block Wall - Full AZ Sun
Comments (17)Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. After reading more on here and talking to others, I think Cats' Claw is what I'm going to go with on the back wall. I'm planning on planting it on the ledge where you can see some of the round bushes and ocatillos. A few follow-up questions: 1.How far down do the roots grow? 2. Will they be able to go under the footing of the smaller (3-4') wall in front? I have a pool going in there this year. 3. Are the roots strong enough to cause problems with a pool? 4. Will they even be able to travel that far? 5. Can you control where Cat Claw grows? I want it to just grow up the wall, not OUT horizontally over the rocks. 6. How far apart should I space them 7. What size should I buy? 1 gallon? 5 gallon? Thanks again! This post was edited by anthemaz on Sat, Apr 6, 13 at 15:09...See MoreFull sun vine
Comments (7)Solandra Grandiflora (Golden Chalice) takes full sun and makes beautiful flowers. I had a large vine when I lived in Venice, and I wish I had kept cuttings. For me, it bloomed all year, although somewhat less in winter. Passion vine is another good choice, and you can get a lot of fruit from it. I would caution against a trumpet vine, as the dead limbs and leaves are a lot of work to remove - the same is true of jasmine. Solandra makes the least mess - the leaves are very large and very easy to remove after they fall. Lars...See MoreEvergreen Flowering Vine in full sun
Comments (1)Here's three: Bignonia capreolata (Crossvine) is a native, evergreen or semi-evergreen (depending on the cultivar and conditions) vine with beautiful fragrant flowers. 'Atrosanguinea', 'Jekyll', 'Shalimar Red', and 'Tangerine Beauty' are some popular cultivars. BTW, stay away from TyTy Nursery. They often advertise crossvine, but are not a reputable nursery. Beaver Creek Nursery, here in Knoxville, has three of the four cultivars I just mentioned. Clematis armandii (Armand's Clematis) is a reliably evergreen clematis. It's not a native, but has no invasive tendencies. Gelsemium sempervirens (Carolina Yellow Jessamine) is another native, evergreen vine with pretty yellow flowers. 'Butterscotch' is a reblooming cultivar you might consider....See MoreBest vine to trail down from window box in full sun ???
Comments (3)Watering is a BIG problem. To water these boxes i have to take the flyscreens off my windows and I honestly can't see myself doing it more than once a week. And because these containers are in full sun and very exposed, I really need something that will flourish with minimal water. I love the look of the trailing petunias but I know they are quite thirsty. I like the idea of ice but how long would it last for? A day at the most I would imagine ?? Less on a hot day?...See More- 16 years ago
