Central Texas Garden Advice / Examples?

Hello Texas! I live in MO but I'm supposed to head down to Temple in ~3 weeks to help my brother do some landscaping on his new home there. I have a tiny bit of experience in the garden and he has none.

I've purchased and read several books on gardening in central TX but I also wanted to see if anyone from the area had some shots of their gardens and landscaping so that I could show up with some ideas of what works in the real world.

So if anyone would like to show off some photographs and provide a little detail on what I'm seeing in them and what has been wildly successful in your experience then I (and my brother) would be much obliged. Bonus points for low maintenance high impact gardens as he is quite busy and his schedule changes often (might not be able to water on strict schedules, etc).

I understand that this is open ended but neither of us could be accused of being artistic so I'm just hoping for some inspiration :)

Does anyone know if encore azaleas perform well in the area?

I lived in Temple for a decade and one thing to keep in mind is that it straddles the edge of the Hill Country. That means the land from the middle of town and west of I-35 has a relatively shallow layer of topsoil (6" or so, but it varies) with underlying limestone. Which means lots of plants can grow easily, but there no deep reservoir of soil moisture when dry periods hit. So plant drought-tolerant species. East is prairie land with deep clay, so you've got some different parameters there.

Thank goodness there are many excellent low maintanence native plants with which to landscape. The book "Native Texas Plants, Landscaping Region by Region" by Sally Wasowski contains some great landscaping plans with lists of plants.

One poster here that has a beautiful drought tolerant landscape said she found inspiration by observing plantings at some of the malls around San Antonio.

Oh, dear, I just found this thread and I hope I'm in time to plead for a reprieve for Martha Gonzales! Here's my story: I have Martha Gonzales, Mrs. Dudley Cross, Belinda's Dream, an unknown apricot/cream Austin that came with the house, and Francis Dubrieul planted together. Francis got blackspot and dropped every leaf, with the Austin and (gasp!) Martha G. following suit almost immediately. MDC got a few spotted leaves on the side next to the defoliated plants, but on the opposite side she remained disease free! BD, on the other side, lost a few lower leaves but she's already regrown. But here's the kicker: I have a couple of other Martha G.s across the yard from the naked one, and they're both fine! Furthermore, my second MDC, about 15 feet away from the diseased roses, has no trace of disease. Another bed across the way has SDLM, SDSA, original Gruss, and Felicia. Gruss usually loses half his leaves, but he and all his bedmates have all their leaves. It seems to me that whatever Francis had this year was something abnormally bad that his neighboring roses, normally resistant, couldn't cope with. But the good news was that it spread only to immediate neighbors but went no further. Now Martha and UNK Austin are growing new leaves, but I think I have to get rid of Francis. He's still nothing but sticks.

What I'm looking forward to is the double cropping. Fruit from primocane and floricane. I've got plenty of space in my backyard and just wanna test them. I've got 3 plants from walmart that were mislabeled as black raspberry. You could plainly tell they were blackberries by the leaves and that they had no thorns. They are growing like crazy. I think they might be black magic or black satin. So don't be afraid to shop at big box stores next season! They've sometimes got some good stuff. I'm gonna extend my patch and add some raspberries too. I think I got a little sun scotch on my brazos and ouachita plants, but it's pushing 100ÃÂ° everyday here lately. Since Natchez are supposed to be able to grow in the same climate as apache (from what I read), I think they'll be fine. There's a lady down my street that's been growing apaches for years.

good additional comments from briosafarm and xtal. In colder climates, new shrubs and trees go in in the spring, because the roots need to get established before the extreme cold which could kill them. But in Texas, the ground is always warm, so the roots have all winter to develop and you get almost an extra year's advantage by planting in the fall. I should have picked up on the crape myrtle thing, too. Light pruning anytime is fine. Maybe there is a stray twig growing the wrong direction that needs to be removed. This is simply tidying up the plants. If a tree-form crape myrtle is wanted, then when it is still fairly small, all but maybe 7 limbs are removed clear to the ground. That leaves enough so that when it gets big enough, you can decide which 3 or 5 will make the nicest, most symmetrical "tree" an you remove the rest, leaving one extra in case one gets damaged and has to be removed. As the plant matures, you will want 3 or 5 main trunks, and the rest will be cut off to the ground. On these trunks, the extreme lower twigs/branches are removed to make the plant look tree-like, but don't make the mistake of stripping any trunk up too far. If you do that, no new branches will ever grow back. All growth takes place at the ends of the growing tips at the top. Lastly, TOPPING crapes is epidemic across the South, for reasons that elude reasonable people. Topping is cutting back the upper limbs severely. It makes no sense, is counterproductive, and when the crapes are bare in the winter, the thick limbs below and the skinny regrowth above is one of the ugliest sights in today's landscapes. Rather than rave on about topping crape myrtles, which some clever horticulturist dubbed CRAPE MURDER, do an internet search on the proper pruning of these plants and read several articles. You might even try entering crape murder and see if that comes up. WHEW! I got on a soapbox. Good luck in your Texas gardening. Actually, I live only a few miles from China Spring. I would suggest that you listen to Neil Sperry on AM radio KRLD 1080 from 8 to 11 on Saturday and Sunday mornings. His book, Texas Gardening, is a very good handbook, although it is becoming outdated, as far as the introduction of new plants since it was published, and some revised recommendations on lawn fertilizing and a few other things here and there. I can suggest some other books if you are the type to read for gardening advice. I also feel the need to warn you that Waco is limited in our choice of nurseries, and some of the leading ones give advice that is often questionable and often plain wrong. It is best to do your research on your own. Texas A&M website has much accurate information. They have a list of SuperStar plants for Texas, which have undergone rigorous testing in order to be given the designation. If you can visit the Dallas Arboretum and the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens, you can also see plants suited for Central Texas. Bonnie's Greenhouse near Bellmead is a great place to shop, and Bonnie knows her stuff. It's fun to visit.

Hopefully that price for corn meal is a mistake. It should be less than half that amount. I'm not sure how you could lose a lawn in Austin in May of this year unless it got flooded and diseased. The St Aug at my new house in Bandera grew from about 10 square feet to around 300 square feet since I moved in (summer 2014). The rain was amazingly helpful. There might be someone, somewhere who advocates using compost every holiday, but I've never seen that. I do advocate using organic fertilizer every holiday, but please don't confuse compost with organic fertilizer. Compost is comprised of depleted fertilizers. 99% of the nutritional value of the ingredients is long gone in compost. So I'm not a fan of compost as a fertilizer. Similarly I am not a big fan of corn gluten meal as a preemergent weed controller. It is the best organic fertilizer you can get, but really is poor as a weed control. As for your future fertilizer schedule, if you want to follow generally what I do, apply on Thanksgiving, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. I use these because they are easy to remember. The application rate is 15-20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. If you've been using that along with corn meal, you're good to go. Put something down in November and forget about it until late winter. I would not use any chemical fertilizer in the spring, but it sounds like you'll never use them anyway. St Augustine practically establishes itself. All you have to do is water deeply and infrequently, mow at the mower's highest setting, and fertilize 3-? times per year. For this new sod I would be watering lightly 2x per week, not deeply twice a week. With the cooler evening temps I have backed off on watering to once every 2-3 weeks. You'll get there, but with new grass you need to baby it a little at first. Soil activator is sort of a key-word term in South Texas. You're likely referring to Medina Soil Activator. What did your soil test say about your magnesium levels? Medina Soil Activator is magnesium chloride and should only be used where the magnesium is deficient. Since you characterize your soil as clay, and there is almost no clay in Texas (with a few exceptions), you likely already have too much magnesium in the soil. So keep backing off on your watering as the temps fall, mow high every week or two/three, and fertilize with corn gluten meal as often as you can afford. Your lawn will thrive on that care. You don't need top dressing, compost, aeration, or anything else. If you're listening to John Dromgoole, Bob Webster, or Howard Garrett on the weekend radio shows, just turn down the commercials. Those guys are selling Medina liquids and compost products that I firmly believe are unnecessary and lead you to buying still more stuff you don't need. I've seen many MANY a lawn killed by too much compost, and Bob Webster, for example, advocates too much compost. The Medina dry lawn fertilizer is excellent; however, so I can't just make a blanket statement about their products. Dromgoole's Lady Bug brand dry products are also excellent. They're just too expensive for me. Since this is a new lawn, did you happen to rototill the soil before putting the sod down either this time or previous?

What a fun project! There are lots of beautiful pictures by this forum's posters if you click on the gallery link near the top of the page. Also, you might find out if you're near any of the plant swaps that will be happening around then. That would be a fun place to meet and talk to long time Texas gardeners and perhaps pick up some plants too! Give a shout out and see if anyone here lives near Temple. Have fun with your project. Spring is a very pleasant time to be in Texas.

Thanks for the info everyone. I've been watching the Central Texas Gardener for the last few days and tracked down the garden layouts from the Austin program. I'll try to piece something together from those maybe. Or if princealbert has some examples that would be great too :)

My brother is on the South East part of town so I think we'll be dealing with clay as opposed to the 6" of topsoil. Did you have any stellar plants that you suggest I try jblaschke?

I did notice that the Bell County Master Gardener Spring Sale is going on around the time I will be there so hopefully they will have some good ideas for us.

I did check out the gallery but unless I'm missing something the galleries seem to be from all over the place as opposed to just Texas? I was hoping for some nice example photographs from the area. I'll follow up on the blog you suggested though.

Shirley, princealbert doesn't have an organized garden, thanks for the good words. That's why I didn't jump in.

I haven't seen the announcement for the MG show/sale yet. It is only about 1 1/4 mile from the house. They had some neat stuff last year.

PA - LOL, what's an organized garden? I don't think I have one of those either. Probably because I love too many different plants.

That's the great thing about Texas gardening, very few rules unless you have a really picky HOA.

We have thin topsoil and rocks here so I'm not much help with clay. When I did garden in clay I used a lot of containers just like I do now.

I'm the one who uses the landscape at the mall for inspiration. We have some beautiful commercial landscapes around here so I'm always looking for ideas when I'm out. The professional landscapers know what works and is low maintenance so when you get there take a look around at banks, restaurants, and shopping centers too.
