How to grow vines, flowers, gourds up old stone house?

During a run last fall, I saw the most gorgoeus garden (near Emmaus & Allentown, PA) - much of it growing up along the front and side walls of an old stone house. All sorts of vines but not actually against the stone like ivy but on strings (?) attached to the roof. We have an old stone house built in 1749 w/great sun exposure on side and front so of course, I want to do the same. I returned to the vine house a few times but nobody ever home so I've just taken a lot of photos. I want to do this this season but want to make sure I'm undertaking this big project in the right manner: What weight of string or cord to use? How to hook/attach to roof (we have no awning under our slate roof). How to stake to grund? How far from foundation should I place stakes? What plants! From what I can tell, it looks like they have morning gloreis and gourds growing up on vines. Any ideas/recommendations for best kinds to grow? I will try to post the photos I've taken so you guys can help me out! Thanks.
