Thorny vine among grapevines

We recently bought and old farm house, and there are old concord grapevines that have been neglected for many years. I want to try to restore them, but they are infested with this incredibly thorny vine.

I am having trouble identifying this vine. I think it may have been planted on purpose by the owners decades ago as this is the only place on the property it grows. I have also seen it growing at a local cemetery on the grave of, who I think may be, pervious owners.

Does anyone know what it is or have any advice?

I wish someone answered this - I am having the same problem trying to identify my grapevines and thorny vines... they aren't berries, I know that. Also, we have a wicked fast spreading ground weed with leaves the size of the grape leaves. No idea what they are either.

Could you post another pic when it starts to leaf out? It could be a rose or a type of raspberry.

Hi. We have these "wild" grapes growing all over the place. For whatever reason, they produce lots of clusters of pea-sized (or a bit larger) grapes; not as big as you see in supermarkets, but the ones around here produce respectable clusters of grapes. They seem well-adapted to this climate and you often have to compete with the birds to get your fair share. Probably by September or October, the grapes turn dark purple and are quite edible. They have a very grape-y flavor that is simultaneously tart, yet there is sweet in there too. They are not as sweet as the grapes you get in the supermarket which, to me, are pleasant and sweet but don't have much flavor. I'm the only one in my family who likes them, but the neighbor lady makes a tasty grape jelly from them that everyone loves. They have a lovely tang that I find exceptional, and it heightens the strong grape-yness of the flavor. But taste is highly individual and varies greatly from person to person. If there are some low hanging branches from trees or bushes nearby, drape the vines over the branches. You would probably need a fairly heavy trellis to support them, so use the surrounding sturdy trees and bushes for support, if possible. The ones that grow near my compost pile are pretty good, but we find them growing all over, neglected, and they seem to do just fine. Treating them better might increase the yield and/or size of the fruit.

They don't look like they are dying to me. Just look nitrogen deficient. That could be from over watering. If your soil is good, you shouldn't need to water more than once a week and once a month may give better fruit. Some water deficit increases the eating quality of grapes. They are the among the most drought tolerant fruit.

Oh I just love the robins! Thanks so much for continuing to share the pictures. My little house sparrows in my propane tank have hatched. I know a lot of people don't like house sparrows but I don't care, I love any type of critter and who can fault a baby bird for being what it is? I'll take pictures and post them soon. Hi, I have the same problem with poison ivy. It takes constant vigilance. Any where a bird can sit (and poop) you will get poison ivy plants underneath - they are constantly renewing all season. Since birds eat oriental bittersweet as well, the same seed spreading probably happens. I pull all other weeds by hand, or use a hoe, but I will use Roundup on poison ivy. Fewer seeds can germinate the more MULCH I have, so I try to keep that thick as well.

With thorns that size and shape, I'd say you have a rose bush, especially with the smooth texture of the stem surface. Blackberries have similar size and shape but not the color separation from the stem color IME and usually some ribs instead of a smoothly round stem. Raspberries have much finer, almost hair-like thorns.

Sure looks like a Rose of some sort. Probably a wild sort.

Looks like a Rubus of some description. Pictures of leaves woukdhelp plus the whole plant. For future reference it is best to start your own thread if you have a new question, rather than resurrecting one that is many years old.

This is a fungus I think. It was only on a few I've seen several places. I can see it moving to the adjacent vine. These are those bb sized grapes that I only see ripened when the birds are fed well. I've seen this disease on rose bushes. So everybody when u trim back your bushes here soon if you were clearing brush at some point wash out all tools with disinfectant
