Fertilizing Tomatoes Question

Hello , I usually have most of the tomatoes set on the lower half of the plants and always presumed this was due to the heat(I live in Texas) that sets in about the time the plants reach 3 to 4 feet tall(or less). On another thread someone said this was not normal and could be caused be lack of fertilizer. My question is :what signs can I look for that indicates I need to add fertilizer??? There is no yellowing of leaves but that is mostly a nitrogen indicator I presume? Thanks for any advice.
