How do tomatoes grow-lengthen in size?

Maybe a dumb question... I assume tomato plants grow from the tip of the plant rather than from the base, and of course the side branches that develop, but I thought I'd check it out. My assumptions are often wrong!

What I want to know basically is if I put a red dot on the stem that's 12 inches above the soil line, will it remain there without moving upward throughout the plant's life? IOW, does the plant growth occur at the top rather than the whole plant elongating?

My New Big Dwarfs are incredibly sturdy with thick thick stems and branches, and they don't have any tomatoes yet. I still think they're going to need support, and I bought these little dinky metal things that you poke into the soil with a ring that encircles the stem.

If the stem continues to grow upward from the base rather than the tip or otherwise elongates, the branches are not going to be able to grow with the stem because of this ring. So that's why I want to know...
