Growing Tomatoes

how many plants needed to produce fruit

This is only my second year of growing tomatoes. I am trying yellow pear, brandywine, and tomatillos. I want to try one yellow pear in a container. Will it still produce fruit without another plant near or do I need two of each plant? Thanks for any info.

Hi Maggie,

You only need one tomato plant (of any type). Tomatoes have "perfect blossoms" and are self pollinating.

If you'd like more information on tomato blossoms, check out the link below. It has to do with avoiding cross pollination, but to explain that, it explains the physiology of the tomato blossom.

it hard to tell at an early age what type of banana plant it is. It looks healthy and looks like it will give you fruit. Once it done fruiting it will die but the pups will take over and keep on producing. Depending on the zone you are located, it might take 16 to 24 months to produce fruit. My guess and we are still in an early stage, it looks like a orinoco.

Simple answer, "a blueberry plant" is your problem. Blueberries have much better pollination if you have multiple plants, often of different varieties. FataMorgana

I'm in Buffalo, had some tough issues with all of the rain but managed to pick so far ~60 Habs from 6 plants so not great but enough for what I needed. I've been using 20-20-20 all year (every 2 weeks) but not a strong treatment. Looks like I might get a dozen or 2 more weather dependent. Not sure how normal this is as it's only the second year I grew them and last year was terrible but it is cooler up here a short growing season.

Maggie may have children and yp is a great way to get them started eating tomatoes.

I'd take a nice batch of home grown yellow pears over a pink grocery store "thing" any day!

Yellow pear are fairly good...as long as you don't have something else to compare them too/swamp out their mild flavor.

Yellow pear is a novelty tomato, only worth growing if you don't really care what your tomato tastes like.
