There is a native Texas wisteria. You can usually find it at nurseries that specialize in natives. It wasn't until mine was in the ground about 8 years, that it started sendng up shoots. But not a whole lot, maybe 3 or 4 a year.

Definitely get the American variety - or the native Texas variety - are they the same, not sure. Anyway, my neighbor has one of those and it is tame on her 6 foot fence. If it was the Chinese variety, it would have uprooted the fence and covered their house! The Chinese variety is very invasive - go native.

Barbra gave me a small one of her Texas plant and it is not invasive at all. It grew nicely in the last year but not into a big bush or anything. I can't wait until it gets big enough to flower, it's dormant right now though. I love wisteria enough that I probably wouldn't mind the invasive Chinese kind but I really love my neighbors and I don't want to invade their yards with my plants. It's bad enough I have 2 Teasing Georgias that are 6 months old and 6 ft high. They'll be going over the fence this spring I'm sure.

I love my "amethyst falls". This vine is indeed tame and blooms twice a year right away. You can buy it at ecolage(that's where I got mine). They send you a good sized vine that really takes off.
Chinese wisteria can take forever to start blooming and I've heard sometimes they never do. I've heard of vines coming up 30 ft away from the main plant and choking everything in sight. It makes a hardly,lovely bonsai tho. PJ

They are different species. The Chinese is Wisteria sinensis; the Japanese is Wisteria floribunda, and the Texas one is Wisteria frutescens. According to the Internet, the Chinese is showier, faster growing and far more invasive. So I'm more inclined to pick the native Texas variety, but I wanted to hear some testimonials first.

I can tell you that the Chinese is very invasive, but it is beautiful. I am going to have to cut mind back to the ground and move it after it blooms this year. It has gotten totally out of hand even with diligent monitoring.
That being said, you are welcome to a healthy start if you so desire.

Chinese didn't bloom for 16 years, cut, stressed, everything. Last year it decided to take over the front yard. Blooms like crazy-20-30' up in the air-for a short time then just tries to eat everything in sight. I get the chainsaw after it. Cut it and it grows 49million sprouts. Hate it, hate it, hate it!! The cemetary in Hitchcock is being swallowed with this stuff.

Mine has always bloomed well, Tally, but I hate it's invasive nature, and it should be off by itself where it cannot smother everything around it.

Ok, DEFINITELY going with the native variety! Now I just have to find some.

The Wisteria sinensis Chinese wisteria is considered an invasive in Texas. I would not plant one. Try going with the Wisteria frutescens American wisteria, Texas wisteria instead!

how are you and the little ones? I've been distracted lately, saw that you were both doing great haven't heard any updates.

I got an amethyst falls at calloways one year. Thought it would be a no fuss plant and put it in a difficult area. The drought combined with my neglect killed it on year 2.

I bought it in bloom and was enchanted.

It's tulip time here. How did your bulbs turn out?

The sprouts and I are doing great. Though sleepless! But they tell me I'll sleep again someday. Ha, I'll believe it when it happens.

My bulbs all seem to be coming up - hurray! Along with a bunch of baby irises. I can't seem to kill 'em. I'm looking forward to seeing the galanthus and grape hyacinth bloom.
