Any tomato growers in the San Francisco Bay Area.....

.... particularly on the peninsula, who wants/needs some seedlings?

I've got all I need planted in Earthboxes and in the ground and the seedlings in the styrofoam cups are dying to get out and transplanted. All seedlings came from seeds bought from Tomato Fest http://www.tomatofest.com/ and were germinated on 2/9/08.

These are what I have to give away:

I was scrambling to give some of these
away about 6 weeks ago. It took some time but eventualy I did get rid of them. I would love to have a Mortgage Lifter, but my lot is full and so are my earth boxes. If you dont get any responses you could try asking your neighbors or even set them out on your side walk on a little table with a free sign. Good luck.

Holy Cow Damon. If you are giving that many away, I am scare to know how many you are growing. I am full too. Luckily, I have an in-law that says she will take all extras. I feel bad for her husband. lol. I am growing chocolate stripes too. They look mesmerizing.

No problem. There's several good ones. I like Stokes because it has multiple photographs of each bird. Audubon field guides are decent, but not my favorite, because you have to back reference between picture and information and there's only one picture of each bird... well take red-tailed hawks for example, which have a huge variety of color morphs so you need multiple pictures. Sibley's is another very good one, but I prefer photographs to drawings is the only reason I don't use that one.

@Nick can I get a link to that nursery's website? Can I see a photo of what the material looks like out of the bag? Do you need to filter at all? There are many rockeries around here that sell fir bark by the cubic yard, but it is either too large or includes fines. The amount of work I would need to do on it far exceeds the extra cost I am paying for a pre-filtered product

Agoodlot! That was a huge kind hearted thing for you to do. In fact, Nick seems like a great person since I have seen him here so you can be assured it's in good hands. Funny you should mention the Fish Emulsion because what you see is for real, at least in my case too. I have yet to battle mites and scale and other pests that ail many of my fellow citrus partners here from just that alone, used consistently all summer which takes dedication. If it were not for this routine, I would fight them all the time like a use too in years past. There use to be a time when many friends and members here had the same results and I believe many have left for many reasons but one because many had pest issues and no longer do, so no longer come here. I miss them all. Please, feel free to share your experience with Fish Emulsion since the turnover group of a minute few have become very , let's just put this in a nice way, doubtful of its benefits)) You are a blessing here and I am sure your trees will be very happy. I would have suggested AW Pottery but apparently they have closed their Bay area outlets. Too bad because they have the largest selection of glazed ceramic pottery I am aware of outside SE Asia! I would check out Pottery and Beyond in Emeryville. They look like they could be a close second.

Oh wow! I would love to try Brandywine, and brown berry at some point, but I'm a bit short on space myself (I was okay before my mom's friend just gave me 6 tomato plants she grew)! I'm only growing one variety from last year so everything this year is new and exciting. Perhaps next year I'll have space to take any extras you have. I may not have time to grow any from seed while I'm at college :\. Meanwhile, I'm sure you'll find homes for these guys :)

Try Craigslist, I have gotten great response for extra tomatoes in the past (and I have charged/gotten donations!).

I used to put a sign at each end of my street at 8am on a Saturday in May, put my extra starts on a picnic bench in front of my house, and by noon they would be gone.

As I have gotten older, I just start less seeds. I think it's called "evolution". But good on you for sharing.

I dont know if I'm going to make the Fairfield Tomato Festival. I went to the Tomatofest in Carmel last year and I was floored at how many varieties they had to sample. Yeah it is pricey but well worth the knowledge, tastings and the seed sale. There was literally 200-300+ varieties to sample, that sold me alone. Along with all the varieties to sample, there was sooooooo much food and wine to taste too. Just my take on it.

Re "saving seeds," won't these heirlooms be degraded by cross-pollinating with all the other varieties you're growing in the same garden?

Not if you bag the blossoms before they open. I use a nylon stocking toe piece (from Dear Wife's torn ones), and put this over the cluster of unopened buds to keep the bees away. Then I shake them when open and they self pollinate. Tie a string around the cluster so that when ripe, I can find the pure pollinated tomatoes.
