I've Got Chills, They're Multiplyin'!!

Okay, I couldn't help myself in the reference to that cheesy Grease song!

I bartered on craigslist and exchanged $20 in strabuck's gift certificates for some red wigglers about 6 weeks ago. I thought the people I got the worms from were a bit chintzy in how many they gave me.

I built my own worm bin, shredded newspaper and egg cartons and started feeding my squirm my kitchen scraps. I tried my best to just feed them a couple of times a week but I have an obsession with them and check on them almost daily to see how they are doing.

My wigglers seem to be incorporating all parts of my bin, including going for some of the top layers of newspaper. This seems to indicate that I am not dropping anything offensive to them in the bin because they are in all 4 corners and in the middle.

I noticed about a week ago that there were a LOT of little, tiny worms. I have been reading about cocoons but had no idea what to look for or how big these cocoons would be.

Today I googled for images of "red wiggler cocoons" and found some photos. Armed with this new info, I took a spoon and lifted out some of the castings. Lo and behold, I found several little cocoons in this tablespoon of castings so my guess is that they are throughout the bin!

I can't wait to start a second bin so I have more castings for my garden!

Does anyone else have an obsession with their worm bins or should I be seeking out a WA (worms anonymous) meeting? ;-)

My kids warn me that I'd better not introduce their friends to my worm bin when they come over.
I too am amazed at how fast they multiply! At least they don't take up as much room as rabbits!

But aren't mothers also happy for the independence and commitment children display as they wind their ways through this wonderful world? He's a big boy, he will be fine and Haiti will be a better place when he leaves it!. I am certain he will report on "pretty" and "funny", too. That he is committed enough to move there reflects brilliantly on all the "basics" learnt at home. :) Never thought about attempting to sell floorcloths, Cindy. They're a lot of work and I have no belief that anyone would be willing to pay me handsomely for the time required. Though perhaps I ought to rethink that as a designer for whom I've worked expressed interest in them, too. I can't wait to see my brother's reaction; he's always been one of my biggest "boosters" and all my life he's done one kind and generous thing after another for me. I get a genuine charge out of doing silly little things for him. Excellent assignment for a poor student with a definite attitude problem, 'bug. Lol. Bet that's gone over like a lead balloon with Mommy-dearest. It won't kill him, doubtless he'll live to lie another day. ;) Time to begin sealing the underside of the piece. Later!

Yeah it does get tiresome having to deal with the millions of babies that return....*like a carpet* Like Karen, I haven't purposely planted out any seedlings since 2005 and 4 years later I'm still dealing with the seed bank. I have been allowing a manageable few to grow here and there since then also, but I get them out before seed sets....it's just too ridiculous. Amaranthus 'Intense Purple' is next to be a goner. I hate to eliminate something so pretty but my ol' back can't hack it anymore!! Besides I'd rather enjoy my garden more than hump my *ss off keeping up with these 2 thugs :) Vera

Prime Ark Freedom is an absolute winner for low chill areas. I have two mature plants and another 3 or so babies. All of them are putting out fruit. Here's my primocanes starting to ripen. The berries are huge, much larger than Triple Crown and much better tasting as well. The plant in the pics is in a 10 gallon root pouch on an aquaponics wicking bed. The thing is a beast, I tipped it twice (once when the canes were 3 ft and again when the new canes were 3 ft) and it just keeps growing. The only downside with PAF is, so far, getting some white drupes due to either sun or heat intensity. If the primocane fruit starts getting scorched, I'll try covering it in frost/shade cloth. If the canes keep producing until dec, then it'll have produced for 9 months in our climate.

That's too bad Logan..We've all experienced something like this at some point in time..At least I have... For what it's worth, I started my peach/nectarine trees from seed as well. Knowing that some wouldn't make it, I began with a dozen pits. They spent two months in the fridge, 37 degrees wrapped in damp peat moss. . Once they came out of the fridge in mid-February, I planted them in regular old potting mix, still wrapped in the peat moss. Here is the link to my blog, it explains everything I did. they sat outside the entire time and really all I did was keep the soil moist. Squirrels got a few of them, but 5 made it and about 6 weeks later I had this... Not sure where you are, but I certainly didn't lavish and special attention on them, other than making sure they got water. Here is one of them that I planted in the ground a few weeks ago.. If you have the space, next time try starting a few more seeds..good luck.

Me too!

2 years in and I'm still looking at least once a week. Just can't seem to stop experimenting with conditions for the ultimate in home worm breeding.

Yes, I need to sign up for WA. I've just eaten a banana and while I was hungry and I do like bananas, I've realized that the real reason I ate one was so that I could snip up the skin and bury it in my wormery. Son and Husband made this for me (at my request) for Christmas - I set it up about midJanuary and have to stop myself checking it every time I go into the garage. I yell at anyone who leaves the garage door open too long - my worms might get cold! Between this and my compost bin, my son thinks I exhibit an unhealthy obsession with decaying matter....

Whew! Glad I am not the only one! Thought I was losing control!

My boyfriend thinks I am nuts. Every time I go out into the garage he asks if I am checking on my new pets!

Maurader, I think you are definitely a worm-aholic!

Time to go out to check my worms! :-)

My worm are in my kitchen, so it's hard for me not to check on them every time I go in there. In the summer, they'll go down in the much cooler garage, and they'll probably be happy that I'm leaving them alone.

I recently posted a picture of them on facebook...I think that qualifies for WA, huh?

Did you start naming them yet? I've started once or twice but I keep losing count, or was it that I keep mixing up the multiple sets of quintuplets? I can't remember. Also, I check on 'em at least once a day, maybe more. After all, they're almost like family.

Ha, you call that an obsession? I check mine at least twice a day. But then I'm an old retired fart with not much to do, except laundry, cooking, dish washing, shopping and playing pool.
