Sara Black Bred by Joe Bratka and many do like it. I haven't grown it and won't be. Break O' Day A nice older commercial variety that produces lots of round red fruits with very good taste. It's done well for me. Similar varieties might include Rutgers or Druzba or Bulgarian #7 or St Pierre or Picardy, for example, but I do like Break O Day very much. Djena Lee's Golden Girl I haven't grown it in ages but I think there are other large gold beefsteak types that I like better, such as Kellogg's Breakfast of Dixie Golden Giant. It looks like there might be some wrong seed out there b'c it should give fruits in the 10oz to about a pound range but I see some folks saying they get fruits that are only a few oz. True seed should be from SESE I would think b'c they introduced it so many years ago Aunt Ruby's German Green I think there are other large fruited green when ripes that I prefer to ARGG such as Cherokee Green and Green Giant, for instance. But if it's the first time you're growing a large fruited GWripe ARGG is just fine. Carolyn

Thanks all for the opinions and advice... seedboy - I hope Marianna's isn't too bad and my black krims last year were good in my opinion which is why I am growing them again. anthony_toronto - Riesentraube isn't the best for flavor I agree but I kind of liked them, they weren't too insipid, just more mild than usual. And I can always use them for sauce as well. Also I didn't grow cherokee purple because I am growing indian stripe instead, which is said to be just another strain of CP that tastes the same. I do have some CP seeds but I grew IS instead because I grew it last year and it was good. And about KBX and Green Giant - I considered KBX but went with Aunt Gerties Gold instead. Maybe next year. And Green Giant might be one to try next year too, never heard much of it till now but I have wanted to grow a green tomato so I'll try that one most likely next year. Thanks again

I've got 15 toms this year, but I think 11 or 12 will be a better fit next year, not as much growing space doing away w/ the straw bales and have to keep some yard for the kids and the dog. W/ room for maybe 12 plants, why do I have over 20 that I want to grow already? This year I had 16 choices didn't plant out green pineapple but gave it away. I had 38 plants make it to grow out time, a kill 2 weeks before plant out helped because I did have about 30 varieties to choose from.

Last summer I tried Giant Belgium for the 3rd time in 20 years. Seeds were from Burpees. My garden in eastern central Ohio produced the most and best flavored tomatoes it has in 5 years, even with far too much rain. Mushroom manure, ground phosphate rock, Actinovate root drench and foliar sprays, potassium bicarbonate and corn meal soak sprays all must have made some contribution but I'm not smart enough to sort it out. Giant Belgian produced just as it had for me in the prior 2 tries. Maybe 3 or 4 distorted fruits, lots of drops, early demise of the plant from early blight. It just doesn't seem to want to do well for me in this area. So I will not wrestle with it again--3 strikes and it's out! Pruden's Purple, Red Barn, Eli Red, Lil's Favorite, Big Beef Hybrid, Coustralee, Lil's Favorite, Box Car Willie, and Ukranian Oxheart stole the show. KBX and Dixie Golden Giant were also nice for yellows but Golden Queen (grown in a 6 gal container) was a disappointment while Lemon Boy sitting in the adjacent container did fantastic! Indian Moon, Mozark, Black Plum, Blue Ridge Mountain, and a Yellow Oxheart grown in my PA garden were also impressive. Pretty much all the varieties mentioned above have been super performers for me over many years, though Mozark and Indian Moon are only in their 1st or 2nd year for me.
