how hard is hard

three weeks ago i had my plants hardened off but crappy weather they were put back in the green house. so do they need to be hardened off agian?

After 3 weeks? Yes I sure would. May not take as long this time but they do need some time, just as people do ;), to re-adjust.

Actually, according to Thomas Watson, they do not need to be hardened off again. (See the 3rd paragraph above the end of the article, not counting the copyright line or anything below it.) I myself have had plants that went indoors for a lengthy time of inclement weather and then went into the garden when the weather got better with no adverse effects.

One caveat: if there is lots of new growth, it may need hardening off. But as I understand it, the new growth should have the same charactaristics of the previously hardened off growth.

Hard wood versus Semi-Hard wood

Hard wood cuttings are usually older, thicker and "woodier" canes. The ones that laterals come off of. Semi hard wood (what I call soft wood) cuttings are those younger laterals that have just recently bloomed. They're usually thinner and more flexible than the hard woods.

Hard Red or Hard White Wheat???

I use both red and white, but prefer white wheat because of the mild flavor and light color; and make all our breads and baked goods using home-milled flour. The difference between red and white varieties of wheat is the bran color which is determined by one, two, or three major genes that don't affect other plant traits. White wheat has NO major genes for bran color. Most of today's red varieties have only one or two genes. You'd have to locate some of the original Turkey Red to get a variety with 3 genes for bran color. It's very dark, and very bitter-tasting. People who dislike "whole wheat" have probably only consumed the more bitter red wheat varieties. That acidic taste of red is what they associate with whole wheat. You can avoid that acidic taste by using white varieties of wheat. White wheat is sweeter tasting. I've used a number of wheat varieties over the years, including free Lakin hard white winter wheat right out of the combine. I am currently using the same variety of hard white winter wheat King Arthur mills into White Whole Wheat Flour for distribution this region. I buy it from Farmer Direct Foods, Inc. (www.farmerdirectfoods.com/), a mill just outside of town. Current price: $19.99 for 50/pounds. The protein is 13.1%. I also have several hundred of pounds of Wheat Montana - Prairie Gold (hard spring white) and Bronze Chief (hard spring red). I purchased these from Wal-Mart and it's an excellent wheat. I generally use red wheat for home-milled "Cream of Wheat" type cereal, homemade cracked wheat and bulgur, and occasionally for bread. I suspect wheat prices will go up. A government report shows the nation's farmers planted the fewest winter wheat acres this season since 1913. The largest acreage decreases are in Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas. -Grainlady

Thanks! @hollysprings, we are planning to extend the kitchen into the breakfast room, although between stairs and entry it's not as much useable space as it seems. @klem1, the main sewer line is located just behind the washer/dryer in the utility room, so about 5-6 feet beyond the kitchen sink drain. No one has suggested tunneling, or given me many details at all; we were all set to start with a contractor in September whose firm then imploded. So now we're waiting for a bit more warmth to start fresh. I wanted to get an additional quote on the cabinets, which is when a KD insisted that I was crazy to consider cracking the slab.

bets - That's good to know. I've had to move my seedlings in and out a lot, and I'm always a little paranoid after they've been in for a day. But typically they seem ok. I don't think I've lost any to sun exposure, unless they didn't have enough water and got dried out. I never really had to harden them off though, since I moved them all outside right after they sprouted. I'd still be a little careful at first though, since the article isn't specifically talking about tomatoes--not sure if it makes a difference. And I've heard lots of things from gardening "experts" that aren't exactly true.

dave - I picked up a copy of "Rodale's All-New Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening" from my library, so I could get some nutrient values for weeds, grass, manure, etc. I skimmed over the section on tomatoes, and noticed that even they said that pruning tomatoes increases production. Kinda makes me wonder how accurate the rest of the book is.

It is logical to think that pruning within a limit could increas yiels. because,
the plants would think that they are going to live for ever and keep growing
lots of branches/suckers.I would think that pruning in the later part of the season
can make even greater sense. You know that those new shoots with lots of flowers
are not going to make it but the plant thinks otherwise. So, in reality those are
nothing but burden on the plant; prune them.
