White Sapote Taste
Comments (10)I've tasted many unnamed varieties at the farmers markets and there were these large ones that are super buttery in texture. They tasted exactly like a very sweet avocado. These are my favorite types. Some of my friends have them growing in their backyard and they seem to taste different from season to season. Some varieties, I think Suebelle is one of them, produce fruit almost year round and the quality depends a lot on when you are harvesting. I like the White Sapote's that were harvested when fully ripe and really sweet. The ones that hang on the tree and you just barely touch them and they fall off. Leo Manuel from CRFG gave me a couple fruits off his tree that tasted like a combination of Avocado, Cherimoya and Pear. You have to use your imagination but it had the buttery avocado texture that I like, a hint of sub-tropical acidity like the cherimoya and a slight pear flavor....See MoreLOOKING for: any White Sapote (Casimiroa edulis) recipes
Comments (6)Linda... No it's not the same as which has a bumpy skin and black seeds. Both those fruits grow here. Our cleaning girl's father has a sapote tree so she brings us a bagful when they are in season. To be truthful, we don't care for them too much but manage to eat one or two each. They're sweet and mushy. Perhaps if I had an interesting recipe I might make them into something that we would like better than the raw fruit. SharonCb...See MoreWhite Sapote season to be a big one..
Comments (13)I wish I could Bright. They just refuse to be commercial fruits. They don't take shipping like Oranges or Mangoes. You really have to grow your own- or be super lucky and have one in the neighborhood where they give extra away. I've been making it an evening snack- chilled in the fridge and most of the skin cut off. Eat over a bowl..lol,it can be messy. Again, not like other fruits you can just take bites out of. Like those soft Persimmons? something like that....See MoreWhite sapotes in a marginal climate
Comments (4)They fruit a bit west of me too. It’s interesting... they’re said to survive 25F pretty reliably as adult trees, and Mulberry Haven in Ojai has one that they said survived a 17F frost. When Suebelle died back, the forecast said 38F. It was a fairly young tree, but that still makes me think it was already a bit marginal. one of the three one-year-old seedlings I had outside (under shade cloth but otherwise unprotected) kept its leaves through that frost. The other two lost their leaves but recovered pretty quickly. I grafted the two that dropped their leaves with ‘McDill’ but i’m strongly tempted to keep the one that kept its leaves ungrafted and see how it fares in future winters....See Moremsmorningsong
