what are some tropical fruits that grow true to seed or the fruit is close to the parent.

My contribution to the list would include polyembrionic mangos (those of SE Asian descent) and I hear jakfruit come pretty true to seed. Beyond that I have no experience.

I have heard that some of the sugar apples also come true to seed but not 100% sure.

Most fruit trees (at least the commercially grown types used for food) are cultivars. They are usually grafted or budded onto rootstock. Some fruit trees (like many types of apples) most often produce seedling offspring very different from themselves. Others (like most pawpaws) can produce seedling offspring fairly similar to the parent. I don't know of any fruit tree cultivar that would produce seedlings that would really be considered true to type, but the degree to which they are similar will vary from different types of fruit and will vary between varieties of the same fruit. Cultivars have unique characteristics or they wouldn't be cultivars. You give your zone as 6b, but you might want to provide more information about your location for better advice about fruit trees. Different parts of the country have very different growing conditions. The zone is important, but doesn't give the whole story.

In my winter sowing experience some have some true and others not. I have some Double Deckers but they are certainly not as impressive as the ones you purchase. Having said that, I did get one a couple of years ago from winter sowing that was most beautiful. It grows to about 2.5 feet, has great foliage and the flower has a nice pink/purple colour that doesn't fade for a couple of weeks or so. I have some of it's offsrpings blooming right now and they are so true to the parent that I plan on keeping them all and doing a mass garden with them. You might also check out some of the posts on the Perennial Forum in regards to the Sundown/Sunrise series. Some are apparently being pulled off the market due to the blooms not developing properly and such.

Very few hybrid plants reproduce faithfully from seed. They may look very similar to the parent hybrid but they wont be exactly similar. And many hybrids are sterile and do not produce ANY viable seed while most others will not come true to type, with varying degrees of reversion to the parent species. Exact or clonal reproduction must be done vegetatively.

When your seed germinates, note if there are multiple embryos that sprout. If so, then perhaps one will be zygotic (off type) and the rest clones. I started some Shiranui seeds and all had multiple embryos suggesting at least a high nucellar % and therefore a good chance that I would have a clone of Shiranui. I'm not sure I have the patience to grow these up, but it's interesting anyway! Four Winds Nursery sells Gold Nugget. They're out of them right now, but should start up again as their inventory grows up. Check back with them periodically.

Yes, I have heard that also. My sugar apples are seedlings, but since I never tasted the parent fruit from any that I am growing, I can't state this with any certainty.

I believe some Lychee varieties are generationally stable, as are Mamey sapotes.

I have heard to the contrary on both lychee and Mamey sapotes......I have an Emperor Lychee seedling that is getting up to fruiting size...so I hope to see soon. Will let you know.

Starfruit does good from seed. I have heard both sides on longans. On polyembrionic mangos, that would be true except you may get one sexually produced tree pop up along with a few asexual trees is my understanding of it. The most vigorous grower is usually the sexual one. Some citrus will. Muntingia.

I have grown starfruit from seed.....definitely not always true to seed in my experience. I have a Sri Kembangan seedling that has the most bitter tasting fruit one could imagine. Not sure if that was just an anomoly.

Definitely it proves they aren't always true. I heard of a good bit of success via seed, but that shows its variable. Thanks.

Yes Key Limes, also Meier's lemon. Not so sure about barbados cherry, I thought I heard some not true to seed stories about it. Jaboticaba I believe, I hope so, it'll be a hell of a wait if I'm wrong.

If nurseries sell plants grown from seed is it safe to say they grow true? I'll just add that I bought the following grown from seed from Excalibur: Red Custard Apple and Jaboticaba too :) And they sell some jackfruit from seed too. I'm sure there are many others...

Oh yeah nothing fruiting for me to test either.

Hey Peeperot,
I have heard from some pretty angry people who have bought sugar apples from nurseries that were supposed to be a certain variety. When they fruited, they were just plain ol green sugar apples. So I would not say that it is always safe to buy seed grown fruit trees from am nursery. If you do you are taking a huge gamble. Personally that is too much of a risk for me. i would only consider buying somethin seed grown from a reputable nursery. Not all seeds are poyembryonic. You are taking somewhat of a risk, although there is a very small chance that you may end up with a excellent cross!

Andrew, in addition to what you said, I believe there are extremely few totally reputable nurseries. I have experienced a few things from both Excalibur and Pine Island which in my mind weren't so reputable. Despite that, in general, they are very good nurseries. I have been to each over five times and have mostly good experience. Some depends on who you get that day. I agree about the sugar apples, my Thai Lessard from Pine Island wasn't that great, I was rather glad it died from tropical storm Faye.
