I've already eaten my first ripe tomato and a second and a third and a fourth. Rest are still green.

Not sure what type of tomatos as I planted seeds of grocery store tomatoes. The types I have are a roma tomato and the typical round red tomato. The ones I;ve eaten were the Roma variety. First one was last Friday May 11th and the most recent one was May 15th.

I am in zone 9 a/b

approx location is south west Florida, hour south of Tampa.

I don't have a ripe one yet, but the first flower fell off and I have a baby tomato forming on my green sausage tomato plant. Of all the tomato varieties I have started from seed this year-the green sausage seemed to be the hardiest especially when I was hardening them off this spring. I had never grown the green sausage variety before.

I picked a handfull of "Cupids" and two Santini Paste on the 10 of May which is my birthday. Picked Hawiian Cherry on the 12th and have more Santini Paste and a Turttle Egg that will be picked tonight. I wanted to make sure that it (turttle egg) is ready.

I don't even have the first blossom open yet! But they're there, all closed up. I plan to record when they open and when they ripen. I always wanted some idea of how long it takes to get a ripe tomato from a blossom...

In the meantime, you folks getting them now, enjoy them for the rest of us!

I had a few varieties that all ripen fruit on the same day that happened to be the day for harvesting the first ripe fruit for the season. They would be:

3 fruit from Bush Early Girl
1 from Mexico Midget
3 from Sungold
1 from Super Bush

I cheated. I grew Momotaro is a big container in a sunny bay window this past winter. Had my first ever taste of Momotaro and it was excellent!

That plant is now outside in the garden with the others. From now on instead of Red Robin plants in that window in winter it will be Momotaro!

I have had wide open blooms on my brandywine for at least a week now but I suppose it will be 2mo before I get a ripe one.

I picked my 1st Cherokee Purple today. It had BER. I was so pissed...My Arkansas Travelers however, Are soon to be picked without BER. ps. I like the "Last Tom" of the the season which I should pick around Thanksgiving! and Good Gardenen to Ya!

Actually had about 4 husky red cherry maters yesterday,,,yummm..my Early girl (hmm) has tons of toms but are now just turning,,Good news Anney..I'm seeing maters on my Brandyboys...finally..whhoohoo

My first tomato this year was Prarie Fire, April 1, 2007, Austin Tx zone 9.

I am near springfield IL and have a red tomato on the vine right now and will pick it in a few days. I was wondering about this the other day"what is condsidred from the garden" I have moved this tomato twice. I got it from a FFA teacher who started them to early and the already had a few roma tomatos on them so put them in a five gallon bucket then to the garden with nice size roma tomatos on them. I know this is not suggested but if this roma is a determinte I would have shot myself in the foot too if I picked it. Either way I can tell grandma that I had a tomato out of the garden before she does.

We had our 1st ripe tomato on Wed, 5/9. That week-end we had went to pick more and found 10 beautiful ripe tomatoes destroyed by the birds. We had already covered the tomatoes with bird netting and shade cloth, but the birds found a small hole and got in. I am not sure if the tomato was a Celebrity or an early girl.

I picked them mostly ripe, then ate them a day or two later.

I ate my first ripe one today with hubby. Man, what a difference! Mine were grown in organic soil in a 20 gal pot and it was my first try at growing tomatoes. I am hooked!

I picked 5 Favorita tomatoes this morning. Do cherry tomatoes count? It looks like that's all I'll be picking for a few weeks.

My post at the beginning of this topic was about SunSugar (a cherry type), which was and still is the only variety ripening in my garden now. I have some 4th of July's about ripe now though. I am seeing better growing results in all my plants so far compared to last year, but I am sure tired of watering. Bring on some rain!

I starter black plums thanksgiving and kept trensplanting them to larger pots to now.They were in the house under lites til 1 april and placed in a makeshift greenhouse made of alumuinm window frames wraped in shrink wrap.I did not know what a ripe black tomato looked like and when we tried the firat 5 they were over ripe. Should have triedthem the last weekof april [first try with black] I also have green zebra's in the garden almost the sze of a baseball. Can someone tell me how how I will know if they are ripe (first green ones] Thanks Dale

I have 14 varietys of heirloom all started from seed and everyone has baby toms on them.
C.P. seems fastest growing but P.L. has some 2 dozen toms already.

I always pick at the first pink, or the bugs/squirrels or downpours will kill or split them. My first were Omars and Sugary. Juanne Flamme and Carmello were my first ripe a few weeks ago. Followed by Jet Star,Mariglobe, Mortgage Lifter, Rutgers. Matts Wild has been going for weeks too. Mortgage Lifter was too mealy for me. I did not like it. Carmellos are great! Tomato porn alert......

Momotaro picked this morning - eaten less than 2 minutes later. Delicious! Interesting that in 2005 I picked my first tomato on the same day except it was a Matina. My Momotaro was just a perfect pink meaty tomato - it will be in my garden next year if it can continue to produce those nice pink globes. I will weigh and photograph the next bunch...just too anxious for the first one!

first of the season was Stupice on July 15th, the size of a golf ball. I have a very shaded garden but have been able to get several handfuls of delicious fruits the past three years.

San Diego, CA - 1st ripe of the season eaten today, and my first and only homegrown tomato EVER, was a fist sized heatwave. Picked pink, too tart / acidic for my tatse - hopefully the others will be better...

My first ripe one picked today is a Window Box Roma(about the size of a medium egg), container planted, NW Wisconsin. One of my neighbors has been picking ripe Sun Sugars(and sharing...yum)for a couple of weeks.

Picked my first tomatoes yesterday off an unknown hybrid determinate store bought (rugosa type leaf). They haven't ripened completely but thought it better to pick half red where I live than chance a loss to animals (Welsh Corgis included, lol )

Hmm, first tomato was Husky Cherry picked the first week of July. There've been 1-3 picked off every 3 days or so. I have no idea how they taste, my almost 3 yr old closely monitors the 2 husky cherry and 1 grape hybrid and eats them right off the vine (no grape hybrids have been ripe yet!). She tells me they're good. LOL

First tomato was a Patio Tomato I found that had fallen but was ripe. We ate it that day as part of sandwiches. 7/21.

First heirloom was Amish Paste picked on 7/23 (wow, these grow big). I hope to be making pasta sauce tonight. :)

I picked 10-15 Large Red cherries last week(July 16th or so). Late last week and this week, I have picked a couple of Early girls,Romas and some Rutgers.

It's been a few weeks at least but my first I think was actually a Sungold grown in a 3.5 inch pot!

Picked second ripe mortgage lifter yesterday (first one bird or squirrel took a few pecks at it)

I have another mortgage lifter on another plant that has been turning color for the last 3 days and have 2 heatwave hybrids on the deck that have been turning for about a week and are very orange hopefully turning red soon. All plants are in containers and were started from seed. I do have a couple of Brandy Boys that I orderd plants (will start from seed next time) that got our a few weeks after the other plants but they should start turning in a few weeks. It has been a pretty good year here my plants are huge and loaded with tomatoes.

Only disappointment is a super fantasic plant I bought that has had BER on all of the tomatoes I do not think it likes being in a container.

my first Tomato of the season was a Cherokee Purple, Which i gave away - we went out of town and it would have been dead ripe if i left on vine until we got home. I did have a second CP waiting for me when i got home yesterday, and i will be enjoying it this evening :)

The second ripe Patio was picked yesterday, the third will be today. They're pretty much the best thing I've ever eaten (and my first home-grown veggies!).

None of my other toms (Mr Stripey, Mortgage Lifter, Early Girl or any of the unlabeled cherry plants) are even a little bit close to turning colour.

I sure do envy the earlier posters in this thread from zones 7-9 and even 10. I am in Zone 4. About 6 weeks after it set fruit, today I saw my first ripening 4th of July. One tiny jewel that I expect to pick in about 3-4 days. Fred in Maine

I cheated a little this year. I started my seeds about the middle of March, put them in a heated portable greenhouse the last week in April, and planted 2.5 foot plants with blossoms on the last week in May.I began picking ripe fruit from my grape tomatoes the third week in June and had my first ripe Brandy Boy the first week in
July. I know the greenhouse made all the difference, but next year I will stagger plantings a little.
