I always try a new variety or two each year, and rarely does it knock my socks off, so it rarely gets a second chance. I am probably being somewhat ignorant by not at least giving them a second trial year. ***** its not a matter of ignorance that you didn't grow them a second year. Any variety in any year can not perform as you expected or hoped for and that's why, since I assume you selected those varieties yourself initially, it would make sense, at least to me, to give them another chance. ( smile) ****** Having said that, I am curious to what my fellow tomato growers think about the following varieties: Zogola Sioux Rose Coustralee Kosovo..and Pruden's Purple Please tell me why I should take these bad boys out of my refrigerated coffee can & give them a second chance, or why they should stay there along with all the freebees that I get from Totally Tomatoes on the rare occasion that I order from them. I've grown all that you have on your list and of course I have some that I prefer over others, such as Kosovo, Cuostralee, Zogola, for instance, but my tastebuds aren't yours, and my soil, my weather, my use of amendments and my way of growing tomatoes isn't necessarily yours either. ( smile) So why not regrow the ones that interest YOU the most? Carolyn

and placed them outside in full sun. I have yet to see any type of physical changes, but will keep you updated. I gather, they may need a few days to acclimate to their new surroundings. While we have no idea how big these plants are now, placing inside grown transplants such as yours "outside in the full sun" without first gradually harding them off is a great way to kill them and kill them fast. No seedlings, regardless of age, should be exposed to direct sun immediately after transplanting. Learn about the requirement called hardening-off plants. Please, if it isn't already too late, remove them from the direct sun and place them in shade and protected from the wind. The normal routine for hardening off, which is discussed in great detail in this forum, is 1 hour the first day and increased exposure by an hour or two daily. Only then can they safely go into the direct sun. Dave

I think you may have exposed them to the elements a little too much at first. 3 to 4 hours of afternoon sun is too much for the initial hardening off process. 20-30 MINUTES of morning sun for the first day is about right, then increasing exposure slowly by 30 minutes a day. Afternoon sun is the most harsh on tender plants and should be worked into gradually after a few days. This is what I did with my tomatoes, and somehow I still managed to sunburn their leaves a little bit. Not nearly as bad as your plants, but it just goes to show how much more intense the sun is than flourescent lights.

I'm quite sure after reading this thread that i have an answer for my early girls, which are all doing this thick leaf stem growing upwards and twisting (more like a sucker would do), with large, thick leaves that are also turning upwards and rolling/twisting. There is zero discoloration or otherwise poor health indications, i grow in the middle of 50 acres, totally organically, my own compost used, mulched with wood chips a year old from within the property. I've used zero pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Just compost, coco coir, water and my seedlings. They aren't stunted, are growing quite fast actually but, here in Northern California in the Sierra Nevada mountains we've seen record breaking temps between 90-105 for a few weeks straight now and I'm pretty certain my plants are just tired of baking. I'm hanging shade cloth tomorrow and will post pictures as well because it's quite bizarre how hearty they are but growing like an upside down tipi (and it's only my early girls doing this, the other varieties are all fine.)
