Help for Civil War era kitchen garden

I've been tasked with putting in a period accurate kitchen vegetable garden at a historic home. My question is would the "three sisters" approach to planting be accurate? Any and all help is appreciated.

While i was looking for something else today, i saw this website from Cornell U: Resources for research http://exhibits.mannlib.cornell.edu/kitchengardens/further.htm
They have an exhibit going on, "Harvest of Freedom: The History of Kitchen Gardens,"in their libraries, and they've placed a lot of information online. For what you want, one of the resources at the above link might be useful. I'll be interested to learn about your final results.

I went to this resource and it was very good, however, it covered WWI and the gardens during the Great Depression. I've saved it to my computer for future use.

There used to be a discussion/ chat forum for us rose folks on the old site but now all those got mixed in with the rose talk. People asked about patterns and I like the ones by truly Victorian. All the sizes are included so you can get a custom fit. However they are drawn from real antique clothes so it's not a modern fit and most of them are designed to go over a corset but you don't need to wear it uncomfortably tight, just snug. If you had heavy work to do then you wore a corded petticoat not a hoop to hold your skirts out. Women didn't have legs in those days and they didn't discuss them :) they were just supposed to glide along gracefully like swans as they walked.

I am 6b because of my proximity to the Ohio River- there is a ribbon of 'warmth' along either side that extends for a couple of miles, and as the crow flies I am about a mile away. My bananas and Needle Palm and bamboos survive with protection (I use straw and burlap, even Christmas lights if necessary), so one would think I could keep a rose going. But I lived in Ft. Lauderdale in '85 and those temperatures scare me to death!! Loving all the suggestions. So far appearance wise I love the Blush Noisette most as it just looks so charmingly antique. I suppose if there is one variety that would be a lot more hardy than another I should choose the hardy one. But size is not really an issue as I don't particularly want huge plants and to be honest, if it died back each winter and came back all neat and compact it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. I am thinking of putting three in my front yard, so don't necessarily want the extreme monsters I have in the back with my other roses. I have Iceberg climbers along a fence line and they can be difficult to "manage". I want to spare myself that in the front by first getting the shrub form, and second not ending up with something that knows no bounds.

I'm going to check with the U of MD about this. The people in their libraries are always enormously helpful when I've used that library, even though I didn't go there. (Unlike using the National Agricultural Library, which is truly like a scene out of the 1985 film "Brazil") So hopefully that will extend to the groundskeeping staff. Do you have any idea where it was? It could be languishing there without horticulturalists knowing about it! I was told about 10 years ago there was a 45' one in Silver Spring, I need to contact the person again to get its exact location. At the time he tried to get Hines to micropropagate it but they weren't interested. (Hines did briefly sell some of his other discoveries, before they went under) I'll be the first to say some HAVE been known to die on the East Coast, but the overall success ratio is high enough to safely say the species is growable there. Unlike monkey puzzle, where the majority of them clearly die from our steam heat. If W&M had planted a grove of them and only 2 had remained, it would be fair to be more skeptical. I use repros a lot and have found two really good sources that specialize in reproduction fabrics. JoAnn's is nowhere on the list. Pickering Farm is local (2 hours) for me but they do sell online. The site is not really up-to-date, but you can email to see if they have what you are looking for. They are wonderful people. http://www.pickeringfarmquiltshop.com/ Bonnie Blue Quilts is a great place to shop for repros online. Windham and Marcus Brothers (Judie Rothermel is with them) are two of the best makers of repros. Even Keepsake Quilting (also local for me) has medleys of repros for sale online (lots of yardage in the store, so they will sell larger cuts than listed). River City, what an awesome site. I took the virtual garden tour and I think on my first free weekend I'm going to be making a road trip to see this garden in person. I notice the "teepees" and assume those are for pole beans. That is how my father grew them. What I'm specifically looking for is whether it is accurate to plant the corn, beans and squash together. That would free up quite a bit of space for my garden.
