How to fix a crack in the driveway ... :-)

Here's a photo of my cracked driveway 'fix'. It doesn't look as blazingly blatant as I thought it would. I like it and surprisingly Bob likes it too although he had offered to fill in the crack with cement, but even filled you can always tell that crack was there.. Anyway it certainly looks better to me than the crack. This way the fault (pun intended) is not concealed, but instead it's celebrated. The aquarium gravel is held in with clear roofing calk. What do y'all think?

The idea isn't original with me. I saw it on a blog with a small sign: "When life gives you cracks, make rivers!"

I thought about saying "When life gives you fissures, make rivers!" Which do y'all think would get the point more easily and humorously?

Can't believe your son missed that................LOL> We had our patio painted to look like big stones, and the artist used the cracks to make it look like the jagged edge of a stone. This was a number of years back and it is beginning to wear a bit now, but I am glad we did it. Glad you like this, I think it brightens your driveway.

With the adhesive failing, the only permanant fix is to remove all of the old layers and install new drywall. Yes, it's messy and unpleasant, but once you are done with that job, you are DONE with fixes. Any patchwork type of repair will just involve continually patchwork repairs as the glue continues to fail in other spots.

Those are naturally occurring fissures. As long as the top is properly supported these will be no issues.

No, I would not rip them off and start again. You can scrape that mud off and put in extra nails, but, 12 inches, is probably fine. Someone just didnt tape and mud them properly. Doesnt hurt to scrape off and sand good, and then retape and mud it and get it done properly.

Fortunately, it doesn't look too bad or pose a hazard. Unfortunately, this requires a professional. I've been doing major home repair work for 40+ years and I can tell you there is no magic product that is going to allow you to fix those multiple problems. Glopping something on or trying to inject something won't fix it and will only make it look worse. Issues like that require dismantling and replacement. The quote you got was pretty cheap for the work involved to do this correctly.

Thanks all for commenting. Of course we know it's not about "fixing the crack", but more about garden whimsy and perhaps a little encouragement to look differently on whatever seeming defects come up like that wonderful admonition of making lemonade when life gives you lemons.

Making the sign on the back of a large iron skillet that my friend passed along is taking more time than making the 'river'. IF it turns out okay I'll post a picture.

It's so adorable! Who knew that an old cast iron skillet could be so adapted to the context in which it is located? That skillet just so completes the project! Love it!

Carrie, I'm with you. I have three cast iron cooking utensils that I use and value. I thought it a shame this big frying pan went to rust. They are not cheap if you buy one now days. I don't know what it would take to restore it.
