Spanish Moss
Comments (33)UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA Cooperative Extension Service Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Spanish Moss and Ball Moss1 Nancy P. Arny2 Many animals use Spanish moss for protection, taking cover in thick masses of pendent strands. Many insects and other invertebrates hide in moss masses, making it an unlikely choice for bedding by campers. The prevalence of "red bugs" or chiggers in the plant is legendary. Spiders, thrips, and dozens of other insects hide in the moss as well. This abundance of invertebrates may or may not be the reason that at least two species of bats also use festoons of Spanish moss for cover. Both red bats and pipistrelles use masses of Spanish moss as day-time resting sites. (copied and pasted from the University of Florida Website) Chiggers along with all their creepy little friends thrive in Spanish moss. Anyone who lives around it knows not to handle it with bare hands or arms. Be careful if you don't want to get eaten up!! Does anyone know how to kill the bugs in Spanish moss so you can bring it inside to decorate with?...See MoreHelp please: Can my Tillandsia ball moss / Spanish moss be saved?
Comments (4)Your plants look pretty bad, but maybe some parts can be saved. I would start by removing completely dead parts. Peel away dead leaves and cut rotten stems if needed. Both species naturally grow in trees and form big clumps. They need a lot of indirect light and enough air flow. If you can't place your plants outside for summer season, at least have them by opened window or use small fan after watering to get them dry. About watering - I properly mist my plants daily over summer season, less over winter season (maybe once per 4 days). I can't recommend dunking, it's even dangerous for some species, especially bulb types. If you aren't successful with T. usneoides and recurvata, maybe try more resistant species like T. brachycaulos or velutina. They tolerate less light and more water....See MoreCan I Grow Spanish Moss Here? Virginia Zone 7a/7b

Comments (5)I have no idea how to grow Spanish Moss. There was never a need to add any. It was everywhere. Does Spanish Moss grow in the trees where you live? I would think it would be easy enough to inoculate your live oaks with some moss if it grows where you live and easy enough to find along the side of the road. Florists could also be a good source to buy Spanish Moss. Find some moss, hang it in your trees and see what happens. Temperatures, humidity, rainfall and air quality will determine the outcome. While you are at it, add in some Resurrections Fern, Pleopeltis polypodioides, to the oaks....See MoreRelated Professionals
