Looking for backyard gardens to tour in the Hampton Roads area

My garden group, Grownups Playing in the Dirt

is looking to tour other backyard gardens in the area. Members are mostly beginning and intermediate gardeners and really get inspired by seeing what other people are able to do in their spaces. Whether it's a half acre or 0.09 acres, we'd love to see how you do it! It can be a 15 minute adult only walk through with questions and answers or we can do something a little longer. Group attendance ranges from 3 to 10 adults (usually equal amount of kids but we will drop the kids from a tour). I'm also working on trying to get some veggie swaps going within cities.

If either of these ideas interest you, please let me know.

Hi Patty! I keep the group private because there are some addresses and pictures of our kids up on the site or in profiles. Anyone can join but it makes me feel like I'm trying to protect the members. We have about 30 members - 10 active. Most are women with husbands and kids of school age, a few men. Most members are not originally from the area, often military transplants, with 1 - 3 years of active gardening experience in this area. I drop members who have not visited the site for over two months so there is not a huge list of members. Most active members try to follow organic gardening methods and buy non-gmo seeds.

In the past we have had pot lucks to swap seeds (just had this in Jan), swap seedling in April, and one or two harvest parties in the summer or fall. I have met most of the active members and hosted a large party last summer before I took over the group. I had never met anyone from the group at that point in time. It was really odd to invite a bunch of people I had never met to my house. It worked out fine but I am surprised I did that sometimes.

The garden tours will be a new addition to our activities and I'm not entirely sure how to best work it. The idea was original part of the group but because we have so many beginning gardeners, people are often shy about their gardens. My sister lives in Oakland CA where they have a large back yard garden tour every year - it's an all day affair of people walking through your yard. While that's great for the people who go on the tour, it's hard on the garden. I was thinking of coming up with a size and tour length that was very easy on the host and garden yet showed our members what people can do with a normal yard and some hard work.

I do this every year for two book clubs,have been on a county garden tour and have had our garden club here many times. You will be surprised at how easy it all works out. I rarely have markers and people just ask what this is or that and I tell them. I always let them go at their own pace. Your food choices sound perfect,in fact it seems to me that you have it planned out very well and yes,I'd put balloons on your mailbox if you think some may not be able to find you easily. I've done this for so long the routine is always about the same. They usually park and go right for the gardens,and then come in to eat. Sometimes,they'll get coffee first and then walk around with that. The bottom line vickster is that these are gardeners and they will have a wonderful time no matter what you do. Trust me and be sure to check in and let us know how it went. Oh...this year I did make some markers for the herb garden. It's very easy and they look terrific. I took some clay pots and smashed them with a hammer. Then took the pieces and with acrylic paint (green) I wrote the name of the herb. Then I sprayed them with lacquer. They should last several years. You can also do the same thing with those big smooth river stones which come in bags in craft stores.

Hi!! I agree you live in the best place to grow these beauties.. I would do a search into your area and see what others use. My guess is that you won't have to do to much to amend your soil . You can always root the cuttings that you purchase and then plant once they have rooted.. Some would even suggest in Hawaii, they just stick them in the soil.. stake them and leave them alone.. Voila!!! Plumeria Garden!!! Remember to leave some space between trees (cuttings) They grow quite large, especially in Hawaii!!! I would go with rooted cuttings and or rooted trees purchased locally. You could find some reasonably priced trees and they will take off in no time. I wouldn't use seedlings unless you want to start from the very beginning... It is your call, but since you have so many positives in your favor, I would buy rooted trees or root your own cuttings .. then plant them!!! See what your neighbors use and how they plant. That would be my direction that I would take. You have so many places and wonderful growers there.. you are in Paradise!!! Have fun.. I am sure you will see what you are looking for now that you are interested. Many will just tell you to take the trees and plant. Period!!! LOL!! If you do get rooted trees, cuttings.. I would stake to keep them stable. Then let them get acclimated to your area and im sure they will amaze you!!! ;-) What a special place you have there!!! ...sorry....editors error that was a Carnival mango graft piece.....and the description she gave of the fruit was that it was fiberless, very tasty and starting out purple then adding like pink and yellow onto it's pallete as it ripens - sounds maaahvelous, eh? I received a few cuttings of that from her tree, and a couple of Cocanilla cuttings (a manila seedling she says that has strong coconut overtones....mmmmmm!) and lastly a couple Thompson cuttings....I grafted them all over the weekend to a couple different trees and wrapped the finished wrappings with aluminum foil (she said it's a must for protection in hot weather!) so....we'll see how I did in a few weeks and I'll post the winners and losers...... This country is so into an over abundance of laws in all areas of modern life. It is becoming impossible to be a law abiding person. We can't keep track of them all. I just learned that it was $150 fine for not turning ones brights off accidently. This concept of changing to a white list was supposed to be for nurseries shipping in and out between Canada and the USA. All natives were not on the white list. So there was to be no trade of native between countries. What was weird about that white list was that Whole plant families were Xed off of the White list for no reason at all and only 12th of known plants were on it. It had only the normal trade type plants and nothing very unusual. I took Sally Waszowskis book on gardening with Texas natives and over 2/3 of the plants mentioned were not on the list. I looked and many invasives were on the list. It was crazy. I am amazed that this concept of White list versus Blacklist is becoming the norm. One gets lost in the detail and can not focus on the true problem plants. I am really concerned that I won't be allowed to grow my natives. It was not originally to be turned on the populous but be a import export vehicle. A way to control the professional growers. I agree, it seems so arbitrary , so draconian and unenforceable. We are now all possible criminals. Guilty till proven innocent. That Ruella (chi Chi ) is a monster. I got hit in the I eye by some seeds. I won't be sad to see that one go. Some plants should have warning labels. The fact that we make plants illegal that are inhabitants of this world shows how nuts we have gotten.

Good to hear that Grownups Playing in the Dirt is alive and well. Depending on when you schedule garden tours, I might be interested in having visitors in my yard too. I'm not going to be around much of March, but April or May would work well. I'll sign up at your website or you can send me an e-mail. Hope all is well.
